Epoxy Grout for Tiles in Warsaw — When You Need It and How It Is Applied

Cementitious grout in a shower darkens, yellows and grows mould within six months. On a kitchen splashback it absorbs grease and will not wash clean. Epoxy grout is a different league: waterproof, colour-stable, mould-proof and resistant to chemicals. Mapei Kerapoxy, Litokol Starlike, Fugalite Eco — these are the three main brands we work with daily. We apply epoxy grout across Warsaw, from Wilanow to Bemowo.

How much does it cost and what affects the price

Epoxy grout costs more than cementitious — both the material and the labour. The reason: limited working time (20-40 minutes per mix), the need for immediate cleaning, and the fact that it requires two people (one applies, the other wipes). The price depends on the area, tile format (smaller tiles mean more joints), joint depth and chosen brand. Current prices are in the table below.

How the work is done on site

  1. Joint inspection. We check that tiles are laid and adhesive is fully cured (minimum 24 hours, 48 preferred for epoxy). Joints must be clean, with no adhesive residue.
  2. Surface preparation. Tiles are wiped down, dust is removed from joints. Porous tiles (natural stone, unglazed porcelain) are pre-treated with a protective agent — otherwise the epoxy stains the pores.
  3. Mixing. Epoxy grout is two-component: resin plus hardener. Mixed precisely to ratio with a mixer on low speed. We mix in 0.5-1 kg batches — pot life is 30-40 minutes.
  4. Application. A rubber float is drawn diagonally across the joints, filling to full depth. Speed is essential — the epoxy thickens with every passing minute.
  5. Cleaning in progress. Every 10-15 minutes we wipe excess from the tile surface with a wet cellulose sponge and clean water. This is the critical step — after an hour the residue cannot be removed.
  6. Final cleaning. Once the grout has partially set (2-3 hours) we wash the surface with a dedicated cleaner (Litokol Litonet, Mapei Kerapoxy Cleaner) to remove the film.
  7. Full cure — 5-7 days. During this time the joints must not be wetted or loaded.

Common mistakes with epoxy grout

  • Mixing too much — it cannot be applied before it thickens. Thickened epoxy strings out and leaves uneven joints.
  • Not wiping residue on time — within an hour a permanent film forms on the tiles that is nearly impossible to remove.
  • Working alone — one person physically cannot both apply and wipe. Epoxy grouting always requires two people.
  • Skipping protection on porous tiles — epoxy penetrates natural stone pores. The stains are permanent.
  • Using a normal sponge — a cellulose sponge and clean water (changed every 2-3 wipes) are essential.
  • Applying below +15 C — the epoxy does not polymerise properly and the joint stays soft and tacky.

What to prepare before the technician arrives

  • Tiles laid and adhesive fully cured — at least 48 hours after installation.
  • Joints clean, no adhesive residue.
  • Epoxy grout purchased. Brands: Mapei Kerapoxy / Kerapoxy Design, Litokol Starlike Evo, Fugalite Eco. Agree the colour before buying.
  • Epoxy cleaner: Litokol Litonet Pro, Mapei Kerapoxy Cleaner. Essential.
  • Cellulose sponges (Supertelai or equivalent) — at least 10 for a bathroom.
  • Clean water — lots of it. Change the bucket frequently.
  • Room temperature — at least +18 C.
  • Cover the bathtub, toilet and fittings with sheeting — epoxy drops on chrome and ceramic are hard to remove.
  • Ensure ventilation — epoxy has a noticeable odour during application.
  • Clear everything from the work area.

A real case from Warsaw

A bathroom in Mokotow, 8 m² of walls and floor — the client had laid 60×120 large format porcelain and wanted light joints that would not darken. We chose Litokol Starlike Evo, colour “ice white”. The tile was glazed — no pore protection needed. We cleaned the joints of adhesive residue and vacuumed. Working in a pair: one applies with a float, the other wipes with a cellulose sponge five to seven minutes later. In a single day we completed all walls and floor — roughly 15 m² of joints, 12 mixes of 0.5 kg each. Three hours later we did the final clean with Litonet Pro. Joints are even and snow-white. Six months on the client sent a photo — the joints look exactly as they did on day one.

Frequently asked questions

How is epoxy grout better than cementitious?

It does not absorb water, does not change colour, does not develop mould and resists chemicals and acids. Cementitious grout is cheaper but deteriorates within six months to a year in wet zones.

Can epoxy grout be applied over old cementitious grout?

No. The old grout must be completely removed from the joints. Otherwise the epoxy will not bond.

Which brand is best: Mapei, Litokol or Fugalite?

All three are professional grade. Litokol Starlike Evo offers the widest colour range and additives. Mapei Kerapoxy Design has excellent flow. Fugalite Eco works well for narrow joints.

Is epoxy grout suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. It is more flexible than cementitious grout and handles temperature cycles better. Expansion joints are still filled with silicone.

How soon after tiling can grouting be done?

At least 24 hours, 48 preferred for epoxy. The adhesive must be fully cured.

Is epoxy grout suitable for a kitchen splashback?

Yes, it is the ideal application. It does not absorb grease, does not yellow from steam and cleans easily.

How much does epoxy grout cost per kilogram?

It depends on the brand and colour. Check current prices at a building supply store — they change frequently.

Can I apply epoxy grout myself?

In theory, yes. In practice, mistakes are costly. Miss the cleaning window — permanent stains. Mix too much — waste. For a first attempt, hire a professional.

Are materials included in the labour price?

No. Grout, cleaner and sponges are purchased by the client. The labour price covers consumables.

How long does grouting a bathroom take?

A bathroom of 6-8 m² — one day. Mosaic or large areas — one and a half to two days. Full cure — 5-7 days.

Who does the work

Epoxy grout is applied by technicians experienced specifically with two-component compounds — this is not cementitious grout where you can take your time. We always work in pairs: one applies, the other wipes. We arrive with a full kit: cellulose sponges, floats, cleaners and protective products for porous tiles. We cover all of Warsaw.
