How the on-site replacement works
- You explain the issue and send a photo of the drawer — the technician works out the slide type and the required size.
- We arrange a date. If the slides are standard, the technician brings them to the job. If they are non-standard, we order them beforehand.
- On-site the technician pulls the drawer out, disconnects it from the slides, and checks the furniture carcase: looking for damage to the side panels or cracks in the chipboard.
- The old slides come off: screws are removed and the fixing areas are cleaned. If the screw holes are worn out, the technician drills new ones and adds plugs or moves the fixings.
- New slides are fitted level: one part on the furniture side panel, the other on the drawer. Marking is done with a template so the left and right sides are exactly symmetrical.
- The drawer is put back in and tested: smooth movement, no wobble, soft-close working properly (if applicable).
- The technician checks all drawers in the unit and advises whether any others are close to failing and should be replaced too.
Common mistakes when replacing drawer slides
- Buying the wrong slide length — measuring the drawer depth instead of the carcase depth. Slides are chosen by the internal depth of the furniture, not the drawer.
- Installing roller slides instead of ball-bearing — it costs less, but rollers do not give full extension and wear out sooner. The reverse change is tricky too: ball-bearing slides need a different gap between the drawer and carcase.
- Fixing new slides into old stripped holes — the screws do not bite, and the drawer starts sagging within a week.
- Skipping the level check — fitting them by eye leaves you with a drawer that leans and jams.
- Ignoring the clearance — the gap between drawer and carcase must be exact (typically 12.7 mm for ball-bearing slides). Too much or too little and the mechanism either sticks or develops play.
- Replacing slides on one side only — if the other side is worn too, you will be dealing with the same problem again within a month.
- Using screws with the wrong diameter — too thick and they split the chipboard, too thin and they do not hold.
