After a flood, walls and ceilings are left with yellow-brown stains, blisters and, if not dried, mould. You can’t just paint over them: the stain will bleed through any paint within a couple of weeks. Painting after water damage means drying, removing the blistered finish, a stain-blocking primer over the marks and repainting. If water reached the wiring or the stains are large and wet, first make sure the power is off and the surface is dry. How much painting after a flood costs and what drives the price
The price depends on the damaged area and how deep the water went. If the stain is superficial, a stain-blocking primer and paint are enough. Important: we only paint over a dry surface. If the wall is still damp, it needs drying first — otherwise the paint and the mould come back.
How the job goes on site — step by step
- Inspection and moisture check. We look at the stain’s edges, blisters and signs of mould, and confirm the surface has dried.
- Removing the damaged finish. Blistered paint and peeling filler are scraped back to a sound base.
- Mould treatment if present. Mouldy spots are cleaned and treated with a product.
- Levelling. Cleaned areas are filled and sanded flush.
- Stain-blocking primer. A blocking primer goes over the stains — without it the yellow mark bleeds through.
- Two coats and a check under side light.
Common mistakes after a flood (and how to avoid them)
- Painting over a wet wall. On an undried surface the paint peels and the mould returns.
- Ordinary primer over stains. The yellow-brown mark bleeds through — you need a stain-blocking primer.
- Ignoring mould. If it isn’t removed and treated, it grows through the new paint.
- Painting over blisters. Peeling finish must be removed, otherwise it falls off with the paint.
- Rushing while it dries. A deeply soaked wall dries for days, sometimes with a moisture meter.
- Not fixing the leak’s cause. If it still leaks, painting is temporary.
