How much painting after a flood costs and what drives the price

The price depends on the damaged area and how deep the water went. If the stain is superficial, a stain-blocking primer and paint are enough. If the finish blistered and peeled, removal, filling and levelling are added. Wet and mouldy areas need drying and treatment before painting. Paint and special products are billed separately, while film is part of the labour. Rates are in the table below.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Filling holes and damage | 20–35 zł/m² |
| Wall levelling after tile removal | 60–90 zł/m² |
| Priming before painting | 8–14 zł/m² |
| Gypsum skim coating | 55–90 zł/m² |
| Walls and ceilings, one colour (2 coats) | 30–50 zł/m² |
| Wall cleaning before painting | 15–25 zł/m² |
Indicative prices. Ranges for a typical scope. Fixings included, materials separate. Minimum order 300 zł.
Important: they only paint over a dry surface. If the wall is still damp, it needs drying first, otherwise the paint and the mould come back.

How the job goes on site: step by step

- Inspection and moisture check. Tradespeople look at the stain’s edges, blisters and signs of mould, and confirm the surface has dried.
- Removing the damaged finish. Blistered paint and peeling filler are scraped back to a sound base.
- Mould treatment if present. Mouldy spots are cleaned and treated with a product.
- Levelling. Cleaned areas are filled and sanded flush.
- Stain-blocking primer. A blocking primer goes over the stains — without it the yellow mark bleeds through.
- Two coats and a check under side light.
Common mistakes after a flood (and how to avoid them)

- Painting over a wet wall. On an undried surface the paint peels and the mould returns.
- Ordinary primer over stains. The yellow-brown mark bleeds through — you need a stain-blocking primer.
- Ignoring mould. If it isn’t removed and treated, it grows through the new paint.
- Painting over blisters. Peeling finish must be removed, otherwise it falls off with the paint.
- Rushing while it dries. A deeply soaked wall dries for days, sometimes with a moisture meter.
- Not fixing the leak’s cause. If it still leaks, painting is temporary.
A small patch of mould is something you can remove yourself, as long as you do it safely: how to remove mould from walls safely.
What to prepare before the pro arrives

- Make sure the cause of the leak is fixed (neighbour, pipe, roof).
- Cut the power in the zone if water was near the wiring.
- Ventilate and dry the room, remove soaked items.
- Mark all stains and blisters, including on the ceiling.
- Clear access to the damaged walls.
- Say how long ago the flood was and whether the wall has dried.
- Provide access to water and electricity.
- Confirm the lift and parking.
A case from practice in Warsaw

In a flat in Praga the upstairs neighbours flooded the bathroom and hallway: brown stains on the ceiling, blistered paint by a wall and mould starting in a corner. The cause was fixed, but the owners painted the stain straight away with ordinary paint, two weeks later it came back through. Tradespeople scraped off the blistered finish, treated the corner against mould, filled it, applied a stain-blocking primer over the marks and painted two coats. The stain didn’t return. The takeaway: after a flood it’s not the paint that matters but drying, removing the damage and the blocking primer; without them any stain bleeds through again.
If dark dots appear in the corners after a flood, that is mould on walls, not just a water stain.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paint over stains with ordinary paint?

Who does the work and how

The work is done by painters on the platform. After a flood the order matters: drying, removing the damage, mould treatment, a blocking primer and only then painting. The scope and price are agreed at the inspection; if the wall is still damp, the painter will say honestly that it needs drying first. Post a request in the HandyMan24 app: painters will assess the damage and advise the order of steps.
