What the job covers

Tiling shows every millimetre. A crooked joint or a hollow spot under a tile turns up six months later, when nobody remembers who laid it. That is why the price is per square metre, not "per bathroom", and why it pays to show the tiler photos of the walls before they quote.

  • Standard and large-format tiles
  • Porcelain slabs and 45° mitre cuts
  • Cement and epoxy grout
  • Waterproofing and surface prep
  • Removing old tiles
  • Tiled shower trays and linear drains

What a tiler does

Most often a tiler takes on a whole bathroom or kitchen: walls, floor, sometimes part of the hallway. But plenty of jobs are smaller: a strip of tiles above the kitchen worktop, a hallway floor, replacing a few cracked tiles, regrouting a shower. For small jobs it is worth asking about the minimum charge, because setting up tools and materials takes as long as for a large area.

Tiling is rarely a job on its own. Before the tiler comes in, the waste positions and concealed frame need deciding, and afterwards it is time for bath installation or a vanity unit. Agreeing the order at the start saves breaking off fresh tiles.

Large format and sintered stone

Tiles of 60 by 120 cm and larger, and sintered stone slabs, need different preparation from classic 30 by 60. The substrate has to be very flat, adhesive goes on both the tile and the wall, and suction lifters and a levelling system are used for handling and setting. Many people do not realise that big tiles in a small bathroom mean lots of cuts around pipes and drains, and every cut is a cracking risk. From photos, the tiler can tell you whether your chosen format makes sense for the room.

Waterproofing and drains

In a walk-in shower or by a linear drain, the most important layer is the one you never see: liquid waterproofing membrane with tape in the corners and around the drain. Without it water gets through the grout into the floor, and the flat below finds out. The fall towards the drain is built in the screed before tiling, not with the tiles.

What affects the price

Tilers usually price per square metre. The final amount depends on a few things:

  • tile size: bigger tiles need more precision and more hands to lift
  • the state of walls and floor, meaning how much levelling comes first
  • the pattern: diagonal, herringbone and mixed sizes cost more
  • how many cuts there are around pipes, sockets and drains
  • grout type: epoxy costs more than cement

What to watch out for

  • New tiles over old ones

Sometimes it works. If the old layer is loose or uneven, the new one cracks with it. The tiler can judge it on site; a photo shows only part of the story.

  • No waterproofing in the shower

Grout lets water through. Without a liquid membrane it soaks into the wall and shows up as mould next door.

  • No spare tiles

Buy about ten percent extra. The same range bought a month later can come in a different shade.

  • Grouting straight after laying

The adhesive has to set first. Rushing it ends with cracked joints and tiles that move.

Before the visit

  1. Tiles, adhesive and grout on site (or agree who buys them)
  2. Photos of the walls and floor from a few angles
  3. Room dimensions and drain positions
  4. An empty room and access to water
  5. Decide whether the tiler should take the rubble away

Questions about tile laying

How much is tiling per square metre?

Tiling prices are still being added to the price list. The tiler gives the amount in the offer, from photos or after a visit, and in the app you can compare several offers.

Are materials included?

No. The range covers labour. You buy tiles, adhesive, grout and membrane yourself, or ask the tiler to buy them and pay for them on top.

Will the tiler remove the old tiles?

Yes, removing old tiles is a separate item in the offer. Taking rubble away is agreed separately.

How long does a bathroom take?

It depends on the area and the prep. Adhesive and membrane need time to dry, so a few days is normal. You see the timing in the offer.

Who is responsible for the quality?

The tradesperson who does the work. We connect you with them through the app, where you see offers and ratings and agree the scope.

Will the tiler tell me how many tiles to buy?

Yes, based on the measurements and the laying pattern. Usually about ten percent extra is added, more for herringbone or diagonal layouts.

Can tiles go over underfloor heating?

Yes, it is a popular combination. Flexible adhesive and grout are used, and the screed is heated up beforehand as the manufacturer recommends.

When can I use the bathroom after tiling?

Once the adhesive and grout have set, usually after a few days. The tiler will give a time based on the materials used.
