What the job covers

A wardrobe that no longer fits the alcove after a move to Mokotów. A drawer that rides on one wheel. Grandma's chest of drawers under three coats of paint. Saving pieces like these usually costs less than buying new. Furniture restoration here means getting the piece back into use: fixing it, altering it, refinishing it. Tradespeople on the platform do not build custom furniture from scratch, and they do not take on antique conservation or reupholstery.

  • Altering and shortening ready-made furniture
  • Fitting a wardrobe or shelving unit into an alcove
  • Replacing drawer runners and adjusting hinges

Repair, adapt or restore

Furniture renovation covers three different kinds of work. The first is furniture repair: torn-out hinges, broken runners, wobbly chairs, edging that has come away. The second is alterations: shortening a wardrobe to fit under a slope, fitting shelving into an alcove, cable holes in a desk. The third is refinishing wood: stripping old paint, sanding, painting or oiling.

In a kitchen, a kitchen front adjustment and a few new hinges are often enough to get the doors closing evenly again. Garden furniture and timber on the balcony benefit from wood treatment at the end of the season, to protect them from damp and sun.

Chipboard versus solid wood

Chipboard furniture can be repaired but not restored in the classic sense: veneer cannot be sanded deep, and swollen board never regains its shape. Here renovation means new hinges, runners, doors or a new top. Solid wood, such as an old chest of drawers, table or chairs passed down from your parents, offers much more: regluing joints, filling damage, sanding back to bare wood and a new finish.

How to describe the piece in the job

Add a photo of the whole piece and close-ups of the damage, say what it is made of and what you want: a repair, a new colour or full restoration. For alterations, give the dimensions of the alcove or the spot where it will stand. Large pieces are usually repaired at your home, while for smaller ones the handyman may suggest taking them to a workshop.

What affects the price

Each job has its own line in the table. The amount in the offer depends on what the tradesperson sees in your photos:

  • the material: chipboard, MDF or solid wood
  • whether the piece has to come apart to be shortened or fitted
  • how many drawers, hinges and fronts need work
  • how many layers of paint come off and whether there is carving
  • the area to paint and the number of coats

What to watch out for

  • Cutting chipboard and leaving the edge bare

A raw chipboard edge soaks up moisture and swells, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. After the cut the edge gets banded or sealed. That is part of the job, not an extra.

  • Painting over old varnish

Without sanding and degreasing, new paint peels off at the first scratch. Either key the surface or strip the old finish.

  • Buying runners by eye

Length, type and mounting have to match the drawer. Measure the old runner or photograph it before you buy.

  • Oily rags in the bin

Rags soaked in wood oil can catch fire on their own if they dry crumpled up. Lay them flat outdoors or keep them in water in a closed tin.

Before the visit

  1. Photos of the piece from the front and side, plus close-ups of the damage
  2. The furniture's dimensions, and the alcove's if it has to fit one
  3. Cupboards and drawers emptied
  4. A colour or paint sample if the look is changing
  5. Somewhere to work: stripping and painting go better on a balcony or in a well-aired room

Questions about furniture repair and restoration

How much does furniture restoration cost?

Each job has a price range in the table. The carpenter gives the exact amount in the offer, based on photos, and in the app you can compare several offers.

Can you build furniture to measure from scratch?

No. Tradespeople on the platform do not run a joinery workshop and do not build new pieces. They can alter what you already have: shorten it, fit it into an alcove, change the hardware.

What about antiques and upholstery?

Conservation of period furniture and reupholstering sofas or chairs are not on offer. On an old chest of drawers the tradesperson can strip the paint, reglue loose joints and repaint it, but that is a repair for everyday use, not conservator's work.

Are materials included?

Small fixings usually are. Paint, oil, new runners and hinges you buy yourself, or ask the tradesperson to buy them and pay on top. Taking old parts away and carrying materials in are agreed separately.

Does the furniture have to go anywhere?

Usually not; most of the work is done in your home. Stripping and painting bring dust and smell, so plan where the work can happen. The details are in the offer.

Who is responsible for the quality?

The tradesperson who does the work, and they issue the invoice too. We connect you with them through the app, where you see offers and ratings and agree the scope.

Is it worth restoring old furniture from the communist era?

Often yes. Furniture from those years is frequently solid wood or good plywood, and once restored it looks better than a lot of new pieces.

Can chipboard furniture be painted?

Yes, after keying the surface and using a special primer. The finish lasts if the surface is properly prepared.

How long does restoring a chest of drawers take?

A repair usually takes one visit. Full restoration with paint stripping and several coats of finish takes a few days, with drying time in between.
