What the job covers

In most flats a "smart home" is a handful of ready-made devices plus the manufacturer's app. The tradesperson mounts them, connects them to Wi-Fi and shows you where to set up alerts and scenes. Tradespeople on the platform do not design systems such as KNX or run new wiring for them. A home alarm here also means sensors and cameras: hooking it up to a monitoring company, or a certified alarm system, is a job for a security firm.

  • Motion and leak sensors
  • Smoke and CO detectors
  • Wi-Fi cameras indoors and at the door
  • Smart bulbs and switches, lighting control

Smart home without chasing walls

A smart home in a flat usually starts with a few wireless devices, not new wiring. Motion sensors switch on the hallway light, leak sensors under the washing machine and dishwasher send an alert, and smoke and CO detectors warn you even when nobody is home. Add smart bulbs, plugs that measure power use and a camera by the front door.

At the entrance, intercom installation is handy too, ideally a video intercom with an app, so you can let a courier through the gate while you are at work.

One system instead of five apps

The most common smart home headache is devices from different brands, each with its own app. A handyman can choose kit that works in one system, such as the hub maker’s app or Home Assistant, and set up simple automations: lights on with motion after dark, a leak alert, cutting power to the socket with the iron. You type in your account login details yourself, and the handyman shows you where.

When you need an electrician

Battery devices go up quickly. Smart switches, dimmers and relays in back boxes connect to the mains, so they are fitted by a handyman qualified for electrical work with the circuit off. Older flats often have no neutral wire in the switch box, and some devices will not work without one. Check this before buying by adding a photo of an open switch box to the job.

What affects the price

Most tradespeople price per device. The total depends on:

  • how many devices and how many rooms
  • whether the device runs on batteries or needs a 230 V connection
  • whether there is a neutral wire in the switch box; many smart switches will not work without one
  • how far the router is and whether the signal reaches every sensor
  • how long it takes to set up the app, scenes and alerts

What to watch out for

  • Trying a switch with the power on

A smart switch means working on 230 V. Turn off the breaker, and if you are not sure which wire is which, leave it to an electrician. Getting it wrong ends with a burnt module or a shock.

  • Buying the kit before opening the switch box

Many smart switches need a neutral wire. Take a photo of the open switch box before you buy the whole set.

  • Leak sensor in the wrong spot

It goes on the floor where water shows up first: under the washing machine, the dishwasher, by the riser pipe. Tucked inside a cupboard, it stays silent.

  • Camera pointed at the shared hallway

In a block on Ursynów or a tenement in Praga, filming common areas involves the whole building and data protection rules. Point the camera at your own door and rooms, and clear anything else with the building manager.

Before the visit

  1. The devices, or a list of models to check
  2. Wi-Fi password and an account in the manufacturer's app
  3. Photos of mounting spots and open switch boxes
  4. Where the router and the fuse box are
  5. What should happen: alerts, scenes, lighting schedules

Questions about smart home installation

How much does smart home installation cost?

It depends on the number of devices. Per-unit ranges are in the table and the price list, and the tradesperson gives the exact amount in the offer.

Are the devices included?

No. The price covers fitting and small fixings. You buy the sensors, cameras, bulbs and switches, or ask the tradesperson to buy them and pay for them separately.

Can I get an alarm linked to a monitoring company?

No. Tradespeople fit sensors and cameras that send alerts to your app. A certified alarm linked to a monitoring centre is ordered from a security firm.

What about KNX design or new wiring?

No, that is not on the platform. This is about ready-made devices on your existing wiring: fitting, connecting and setting them up in the app.

Can I connect a switch myself?

If it runs on a battery, yes. Anything that goes to 230 V is for the tradesperson: only they should work on mains circuits.

Who is responsible for the quality?

The tradesperson who does the work, and they issue the invoice. In the app you see offers and ratings and agree the scope.

Does a smart home work without internet?

Some systems run locally, but smartphone alerts and control from outside need an internet connection. Ask the handyman about this when choosing equipment.

Can I take the devices with me when I move?

Wireless ones, yes. Switches and relays in back boxes stay with the wiring unless the handyman swaps them back for ordinary ones.

Where should I start?

With what will genuinely make life easier: leak and smoke sensors, hallway lighting or a door camera. The rest can be added over time.
