LED transformer installation: what the job involves
An LED transformer, or LED driver, turns the 230 V mains into 12 or 24 V for LED strips and some low-voltage downlights. A driver that is too weak or boxed in without air gets hot and fails within months. Installation covers choosing the spot, wiring it in and checking the load.
The price is per driver. Swapping an old transformer for a new one costs about the same as a new installation.
What the installation covers
- checking the total power of the connected strips or lights;
- choosing a driver with spare capacity;
- mounting it where it gets air and can be replaced;
- wiring the 230 V side with the circuit switched off;
- connecting the load and checking the light does not flicker.
Why lights flicker
Flicker and buzzing usually mean the driver does not suit the load or the dimmer. LED strip needs a constant-voltage driver, and some dimmers only work with specific drivers. The tradesperson will check compatibility and pick the right model.
What to prepare
The driver, or the strip details: voltage, watts per metre and length. Add a photo of the current transformer and where it will go. If the lights are dimmed, give the dimmer model.
Common questions
How much spare capacity should a driver have?
Usually about a fifth above the strip’s power. It then runs cooler and lasts longer.
Can the driver go above a suspended ceiling?
Yes, but where it can be reached for replacement, such as near an access hatch or a downlight hole.
Is this a job for an electrician?
The 230 V side is wired with the circuit off and following safety rules. Doing it yourself is risky.
