Socket replacement

A socket gets replaced when the housing cracks, plugs fall out or heat up in use, a scorched socket leaves a black mark, or simply when you switch to a new range of fittings. Socket replacement works with the existing back box and cable, but it calls for the same care as any electrical installation.

How the replacement goes

• switching off the right circuit at the consumer unit and confirming it is dead;
• removing the old faceplate and socket, checking the cables and the back box;
• trimming scorched or brittle cable ends, if there is enough slack;
• connecting the new socket with the earth and fixing it firmly in the box;
• switching the power back on and checking it works.

Warning signs not to ignore

A warm, discoloured or sparking socket is not a cosmetic issue. The usual cause is a loose cable connection that heats up under heavy load, such as a kettle or heater. With the socket off, the handyman also checks the cable is not damaged further into the wall. In older flats with aluminium wiring or no earth, a socket replacement can reveal that the wiring needs a wider inspection.

The work is done by a handyman qualified for electrical work, always with the circuit switched off.

What to prepare

Buy new sockets from the same range as the rest of your fittings, or leave the choice to the handyman. In the job, give the number of sockets and add a photo, especially if one is scorched.
