Light installation (lamp, chandelier)

A ceiling light, chandelier or wall light is connected to an existing outlet in the ceiling or wall. Most depends on the weight of the fitting and the ceiling material: wall plugs are enough for concrete, while plasterboard needs cavity anchors or a fixing to the frame.

The price is per light fitting. Heavy chandeliers, multi-arm models and lights that arrive in parts take longer.

What the installation covers

• switching off the circuit and testing it is dead;
• assembling the fitting if it arrived in parts;
• fixing the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall;
• connecting the wires, keeping the earth connected;
• fitting shades and bulbs and testing the light.

Safety

Lights are only connected with the circuit switched off. Older blocks sometimes have wiring with no earth or aluminium cables, in which case the tradesperson will say what needs fixing. A heavy chandelier on plasterboard must hang from a fixing that can carry its weight.

What to prepare

The light with all its parts, plus the bulbs. Give the number of lights, their weight or model and the ceiling type in the request, and add a photo of the outlet. For high ceilings, give the height so the right ladder comes along.
