Shortening furniture: what the job involves
The bookcase will not fit under the slope, a wall cabinet blocks the cooker hood, or the table is too tall for the new chairs. Shortening furniture means reducing the height, width or depth of a board or wooden piece so it still looks tidy and holds together after the cut.
The price is per job. The material, the number of parts to cut and whether fittings must move affect it.
What shortening covers
- taking the piece apart as far as needed;
- cutting the sides, shelves, back or legs;
- edge-banding the new edges;
- drilling new holes for the joints;
- reassembling and levelling it.
How board is cut
Laminated board chips easily, so it is cut with the right blade or a plunge saw on a guide rail. Wide cuts are sometimes better done at a board supplier, where a panel saw gives a clean edge. The tradesperson will say which parts to cut on site and which to take in.
What to prepare
The furniture dimensions and how much has to come off. Say what is in the way: slope, radiator, windowsill, hood. Photos from the front and side show where the joints and fittings are.
Common questions
Will it be stable afterwards?
Yes, if the cut avoids the joints or new joints are drilled elsewhere.
How is this different from fitting into a niche?
Shortening changes one dimension. Niche fitting also includes cuts for slopes, skirting and obstacles.
Can a table be shortened?
Yes. The legs are cut evenly, then the table is checked for wobble.
