Hinge adjustment: what the job involves
A cabinet door has dropped, rubs against the next front or will not quite close. Usually nothing is broken: the concealed hinge has just drifted out of adjustment from daily use. Hinge adjustment means setting the doors in three directions so the gaps are even and the doors close quietly and fully.
The price is per hinge. In a typical kitchen a dozen or more are adjusted in one visit.
What adjustment covers
- side-to-side setting so a door does not rub its neighbour;
- height adjustment when a door has dropped;
- depth adjustment when a front stands proud of the carcass;
- tightening the hinge in the carcass and the door;
- checking the soft-close works.
When adjustment is not enough
If a screw just spins, the board around it is stripped and adjustment will not help. The hole then gets a dowel or the hinge is moved. A cracked hinge cup or a grinding hinge is ready for replacement.
What to prepare
Count how many doors are giving trouble and photograph a hinge from inside. Describe in the request what happens: dropping, rubbing, not closing. Empty the cabinets the tradesperson will work in.

Can I adjust a hinge myself?
Often, with a cross-head screwdriver. If that does not work or many doors are affected, book a tradesperson.
How often do hinges need adjusting?
It depends on use. Kitchen doors are worth checking now and then, especially after the first months.
