Oil paint painting

Oil-based paint gives a hard, washable finish that copes well with damp and knocks. It is used on dado walls in stairwells, in cellars, on wood and metal, and older flats often have it on the walls already. Painting with oil-based paint needs different preparation from ordinary emulsion and longer drying.

The price is per square metre. The state of the surface and the number of coats affect it.

How painting works

• keying the old finish with sandpaper;
• degreasing and dusting the surface;
• filling dents and sanding;
• the first coat and drying per the data sheet;
• a second coat for an even colour.

Old oil paint on a wall

Ordinary latex paint does not hold well on old oil paint and can peel off in sheets. If you want to switch to emulsion, the wall is keyed and primed with a bonding primer, or the oil coat is removed. The tradesperson checks what is on the wall before the paint is chosen.

What to prepare

An emptied room, or furniture in the middle under sheets, and good ventilation. Oil paints smell strongly and some take many hours to dry, so plan for the room to be out of use. Give the area and the surface in the request: wall, wood or metal.
