Walls in different colours: what the job involves
An accent wall behind the bed, two colours in a child’s room, a band at half height in the hallway. Painting walls in different colours only looks good when the line between colours is straight and crisp and the light colour does not show through the dark one. It is more precise work than painting a room in one colour.
The price is per square metre. The number of colours, the number of dividing lines and whether the walls need filling first all affect it.
How painting works
- protecting the floor, skirting and sockets;
- painting the lighter colour first;
- marking the line with a spirit level or laser;
- masking with tape and sealing its edge;
- painting the second colour and pulling the tape before the paint fully dries.
A crisp colour line
Paint creeps under tape on a textured wall. So the tape edge is sealed with a thin coat of the first colour or clear acrylic. A line in a room corner is rarely dead straight because walls are not true, so it is often set a little way off the corner.
What to prepare
Your chosen colours with the maker’s codes, a plan of which wall gets which colour, and a sketch if there are stripes or patterns. Move furniture away from the walls. Give the area and the number of colours in the request.
Common questions
How many coats for a dark colour?
Usually two, sometimes three over a light base. A tinted primer close to the final shade helps.
Can the ceiling be coloured too?
Yes, but the ceiling is usually painted first, before the walls.
Will the tradesperson pick the colours?
They can help judge how a colour looks on the wall. The choice is yours.
