Pipe painting (water, heating, gas): what the job involves
Water pipes, heating risers and gas pipes in older flats run along the walls in plain view, often under several layers of yellowed paint and patches of rust. Painting pipes covers cleaning them, rust protection and painting with a paint suited to the temperature and the type of system.
The price is per running metre. Pipe diameter and how close they sit to the wall affect the time.
How painting works
- protecting the wall and floor around the pipes;
- removing rust and flaking paint;
- degreasing;
- an anti-rust primer on bare metal;
- two coats, heat-resistant on heating pipes.
Gas pipes
In Poland gas pipes are painted yellow so they are easy to recognise. Paint must not cover valves, joints or labels. Nothing on the gas installation is loosened or moved while painting, and if you smell gas, work stops and the gas emergency service is called. Heating pipes are not painted while hot.
What to prepare
Access to the pipes, furniture moved away and a decision on which pipes get painted and in what colour. Give a rough pipe length and photos in the request. You can buy the paint or agree it with the tradesperson.
Common questions
Can pipes be any colour?
Water and heating pipes can. Gas pipes should stay yellow.
Does the heating need switching off?
Best to paint outside the season, or once the riser is shut off and cool.
Will paint stop the rust?
Anti-rust primer slows it. A badly corroded pipe should be assessed by a plumber.
