Wall cleaning before painting: what the job involves
Paint will not stick to grease, dust or nicotine. On kitchen walls, around light switches and in hallways, fresh paint starts peeling within weeks or stains bleed through it. Cleaning and washing walls before painting removes dirt, grease and loose old paint so the new coat bonds properly.
The price is per square metre of wall. Priming and painting are further items.
What cleaning covers
- dusting the walls and clearing cobwebs;
- degreasing in the kitchen and around switches;
- scraping off flaking paint;
- washing off water marks and nicotine stains;
- rinsing and letting the wall dry before priming.
Stains that bleed through
Flood marks, soot and nicotine bleed through ordinary paint even after washing. Those spots get a stain-blocking paint or primer before the whole wall is painted. Mould needs a separate fungicide and the cause of the damp found.
What to prepare
Furniture moved away from the walls and pictures and shelves taken down. Say in the request which rooms and what kind of dirt: dust, grease, nicotine, water marks. Photos of the walls help gauge the work.
Common questions
Do walls always need washing first?
In a bedroom dusting is often enough. Kitchens, bathrooms and hallways are worth washing every time.
How long does a wall take to dry?
Usually a few hours. It must be fully dry before priming.
Will washing remove mould?
No. Mould is treated with a fungicide, after dealing with the cause of the damp.
