Radiator painting: what the job involves
Old cast-iron radiators yellow, flake and rust around the valves, and after the walls are repainted they stand out against the fresh colour. Painting radiators means cleaning off rust and old paint, priming and painting with a radiator paint that does not yellow with heat.
The price is per radiator and depends on its size and type.
How painting works
- protecting the wall and floor around the radiator;
- removing flaking paint and rust with a wire brush;
- degreasing the surface;
- an anti-rust primer on bare metal;
- two coats of radiator paint, including between the sections.
Cold or warm
Radiators are painted cold, outside the heating season or after the valve is shut and they have cooled. On a warm radiator paint dries too fast, runs and bonds worse. The insides of the sections and the back are done with an angled brush, and panel radiators can sometimes come off their brackets if the system allows.
What to prepare
Access to the radiators, with covers and curtains removed. Give the number, type, cast-iron column, panel or towel rail, and the colour in the request. You buy the radiator paint or agree it with the tradesperson.
Common questions
Will wall paint do?
No. Ordinary paint yellows and flakes with heat.
Does the system need draining?
Not for painting in place. Taking a radiator off means shutting the valves and sometimes draining.
When can the heating go back on?
Once the paint is dry per the data sheet, usually after a day.
