Furniture Shortening in Warsaw — Trimming to Size Without Replacement
Wardrobe won’t go under the ceiling after renovation? Chest of drawers is too high and bangs into the windowsill? Table won’t slide into the kitchen recess? Replacing furniture over a few extra centimetres just doesn’t add up. We shorten furniture on site: cut down the height, width or depth, finish the edge, then put it back together. How much does furniture shortening cost
The price depends on the material, how many cuts are needed, and how tricky the job is. Trimming table legs is one thing. Shortening a wardrobe by 10 cm and moving the top, back panel and hinges is something else. The final cost is influenced by board thickness, finish, whether fresh edge banding is required, and how many elements need cutting again. Current rates are in the table below.

How the shortening works
- We measure the furniture and the space it has to fit into. We work out how much needs to come off and from which side.
- We take it apart: remove doors, shelves, back panel, hardware.
- We mark the cutting line, taking the edge banding thickness into account. We use a guide rail for a neat cut without chips.
- We make the cut with a circular saw or jigsaw fitted with a laminate blade.
- We finish the edge: fit melamine or PVC edge banding, trim it flush, sand it down.
- We drill new holes for shelf supports, hinges — after cutting, all positions move.
- We assemble everything again, check stability, and adjust doors and drawers.
Common mistakes when shortening furniture yourself
- Using a jigsaw without a guide — the cut line drifts and the laminate chips.
- Ignoring the edge banding thickness — the part comes out 2 mm too wide.
- Missing the back panel — that needs cutting too.
- Not moving the shelf support holes after the cut.
- Cutting laminated board with an ordinary blade — chips all along the line.
- Not checking floor level after shortening — the furniture rocks.
- Using sandpaper instead of edge banding — chipboard takes in moisture and swells.
What to prepare before the visit
- Measure the target height/width carefully — include skirting boards, cornices, sockets.
- Decide from which side the piece should be cut.
- Empty the furniture fully.
- Pull it away from the wall.
- Leave 2-3 metres of free working space.
- If the item is heavy, tell us in advance — a second person may be necessary.
- Protect the floor with film or cardboard — sawdust spreads during cutting.
- If you want a specific edge banding colour, buy it beforehand.
- Check for hidden wiring or pipes inside (important for built-in units).

A real case from Warsaw
A client in Mokotow bought a 240 cm wardrobe, but after installation of a stretch ceiling the room height turned out to be 232 cm. Sending the wardrobe back was costly and time-consuming. The technician came out, took the wardrobe apart, removed the top and both side panels. He cut the sides down by 8 cm with a circular saw and guide rail, then finished the edges with 0.4 mm PVC banding in Sonoma oak. He drilled new holes for the shelf supports and clothes rail. Then he put it back together and adjusted the sliding doors. The whole job took three hours. The wardrobe fit just right — 5 mm clearance to the ceiling, doors sliding smoothly.

By how many centimetres?
In practice, any amount. If more than 15-20 cm has to be removed, ordering a new panel to size can work out cheaper.
Will cut marks be visible?
Not with proper finishing. We use colour-matched edge banding and trim it flush.
Can IKEA furniture be shortened?
Yes. The only detail is honeycomb-core models: after the cut, the edge has to be capped.
Does the technician bring edge banding?
Yes, we bring basic colours with us. If you want an exact match, better to buy it in advance.
