Large Format Wall Tile Installation in Warsaw
15.03.2026Large Format Wall Tile Installation in Warsaw
Large format tiles on the wall create an entirely different sense of space. A single 60×120 or 80×160 slab covers an area that would otherwise need 8-12 standard tiles. Fewer grout lines, a monolithic surface, and a visual expansion of the room. But installing large format on walls is harder than on floors: the tiles are heavy, the adhesive must hold them vertically until it sets, and every cut must be precise to the millimetre. We work with large format across Warsaw — from Mokotow to Bialoleka.
How much does it cost and what affects the price
The cost of large format wall tiling depends on tile size, wall condition and complexity of cuts. A 60×120 format is the baseline — easier to handle. Slabs at 120×260 or 120×120 are a serious task: each piece weighs 15-30 kg, adhesive needs enhanced grab, and two installers are essential. Uneven walls require plastering or plasterboard levelling — that is a separate item. Materials are charged separately; consumables are included in the labour price. Current prices are in the table below.
| Service | min | max |
|---|---|---|
| Large format — wall | 300 zł/m² | 450 zł/m² |
| Large format 120+ cm | 220 zł/m² | 350 zł/m² |
| Large format — floor | 280 zł/m² | 420 zł/m² |
| Large format — shower walls | 350 zł/m² | 500 zł/m² |
| Tile grinding at 45° | 60 zł/mb | 90 zł/mb |
| Epoxy grouting large format | 60 zł/m² | 90 zł/m² |
How the work is done on site
- Measurement and wall assessment. We check with a straight edge — a deviation of more than 3 mm per metre is unacceptable for large format on walls. If the wall is uneven we suggest levelling with Knauf HP Start plaster or plasterboard.
- Surface preparation. We prime the wall in two coats. Plasterboard must be moisture-resistant (green board) with reinforced joints.
- Dry layout. We determine where full tiles go and where cuts are needed. Cuts are hidden in corners, behind furniture, behind mirrors. In bathrooms we align with plumbing: access panels, mixer outlets, niches.
- Adhesive application. For walls we use C2 TE S1 adhesive with extended open time: Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1, Ceresit CM 17, Litokol K80. Dual application: 10-12 mm notched trowel on the wall and a thin layer on the tile.
- Tile mounting. Two installers work together: one holds, the other aligns. Suction cups are mandatory from 80 cm format. A levelling system (SVP) locks the position until the adhesive sets.
- Grouting after 24-48 hours. On bathroom walls we recommend epoxy grout (Mapei Kerapoxy, Litokol Starlike) — it does not absorb water or develop mould. Joints with the wall and sanitary fittings are sealed with sanitary silicone.
- Final check: surface flatness, grout quality, tile cleanliness. Care instructions provided.
Common mistakes with large format wall tiling
- Tiling an uneven wall — the tile does not sit flush, adhesive is uneven, corners stick out. Large format reveals every millimetre of irregularity.
- Using standard C1 adhesive — a tile weighing 20+ kg slides down the wall before the adhesive sets. Walls need at least C2 TE S1 with thixotropic properties.
- Not using suction cups — trying to lift the tile by hand. Result: chipped corner, crack, or injury. Sigma or Montolit suction cups are standard equipment.
- Cutting with an angle grinder freehand — uneven cuts, chipped glaze. Large format must be cut on an electric tile cutter with a diamond blade and water cooling.
- Applying adhesive only to the wall — voids form under the heavy tile. When drilling later (hooks, shelves) the tile cracks precisely at those voids.
- No grout joints — supposedly seamless installation leads to chipping from thermal expansion.
- Starting from the top — tiles slide before the adhesive sets. On walls you always start from the bottom, using a support batten.
What to prepare before the technician arrives
- The wall must be plastered and dry. Fresh plaster needs at least 14 days before tiling.
- Plasterboard — only moisture-resistant type with a double frame for large format.
- Buy tiles with a 10-15% surplus. Cuts, transport chips and fitting adjustments create more waste than with standard tiles.
- Make sure all tiles are from the same batch — shade and calibre must match.
- Adhesive for walls — C2 TE S1: Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1, Ceresit CM 17. Consumption 5-7 kg/m².
- Grout — epoxy for bathrooms, cementitious for dry rooms. Agree the colour in advance.
- Remove sanitary fittings, mirrors and wall cabinets — full access to the wall is needed.
- Cover the floor and bathtub with protective sheeting — cutting and installation produce dust and adhesive drips.
- Ensure electricity and water are available near the work area.
- Tell the technician the tile size, quantity and layout plan (photos of the room help).
A real case from Warsaw
A bathroom in Wola, 6 m² — the client chose Paradyż 60×120 porcelain in light marble for every wall. We removed the old tiles and found the plaster was delaminating in places. We knocked off the weak sections, levelled with Knauf HP Start and allowed a week to dry. Primed, then dual-applied Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1 with a 10 mm trowel. Worked in a pair with Sigma suction cups — each slab weighed about 18 kg. Levelling clips on every joint. All four walls were finished in three days. Grout — Litokol Starlike, white. Cut-outs for the mixer and access panel were made on a rail-guided tile cutter. The bathroom now looks like a room in a fine hotel — minimal grout lines, one continuous light surface.
Frequently asked questions
Can the wall support the weight of large format tiles?
Brick or concrete — no problem. Plasterboard — only moisture-resistant type with a double frame and stud spacing no more than 40 cm. Standard single-layer board is unsuitable for formats above 60 cm.
Is a support batten needed for wall installation?
Yes. An aluminium profile is fixed at the lower edge of the second row. It prevents the tiles from sliding before the adhesive sets. The bottom row (cut tiles) is installed last.
Can large format tiles be used on a kitchen wall?
Yes, large format porcelain is excellent for kitchen splashbacks and walls. Fewer joints mean easier cleaning.
Which adhesive should be used on walls?
C2 TE S1 — flexible, thixotropic (non-slip), with extended open time. Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1, Ceresit CM 17, Litokol K80.
Why is dual adhesive application necessary?
Adhesive is applied to both the wall and the tile. This ensures 100% coverage. Without it, voids remain — the tile may fall off or crack when drilled.
Is seamless installation possible?
Completely seamless — no. A minimum 1.5-2 mm joint is needed for thermal expansion. However, with large format and colour-matched grout the joints are virtually invisible.
How are cut-outs for sockets and mixers made?
Round holes — with a diamond core bit. Rectangular openings — with a tile cutter or angle grinder and guide. Always with water cooling to prevent chipping.
How long does wall installation take?
One wall of 3-4 m² — half a day to a full day. A bathroom with 15-20 m² of walls — 3-5 days, plus a day for grouting.
Are materials included in the price?
No. Tiles, adhesive, grout and primer are purchased by the client. The labour price includes consumables: levelling clips, suction cups and cutting discs.
What if a tile is damaged after installation?
Replacing a single large format tile is possible but more involved than a standard one. Keep 1-2 spare tiles. The technician will carefully cut out the damaged piece and fit a new one.
Who does the work
Large format wall tiles are installed by technicians experienced specifically with oversized formats — it is a distinct skill set. We arrive with a professional tile cutter, suction cups, a full levelling system and a laser level. We work in pairs — lifting and accurately positioning a 60×120 slab on a wall single-handed is not feasible. We cover all of Warsaw and the nearby suburbs. Call or message to book — we reply within an hour.
