A shelf looks easy — two brackets, four wall plugs, finished. Then you start drilling and the problems show up: plasterboard will not take the load, the brackets sit unevenly, the shelf bends under books. In flats around Mokotow and Ursynow, walls may be concrete, brick, hollow block or plasterboard — and each one calls for different fixings and a different approach. How much does shelf installation cost

The price depends on how many shelves there are, the wall type and the way they are mounted. One shelf on concrete is fast. Five on plasterboard with hidden fixings is a different job altogether. Standard fixings (wall plugs, screws) are included. See the current rates in the table below.

How installation works

1. We check the wall type: concrete, brick, hollow block, plasterboard.
2. We mark the fixing points using a laser level.
3. We drill with a hammer drill (concrete) or driver (plasterboard). For plasterboard — toggle or molly bolts.
4. We put in the plugs and fasten the brackets.
5. We fit the shelf and verify the level.
6. We test the load — put on the expected weight and make sure the fixings are holding.

Common mistakes

• Drilling into plasterboard with standard plugs — the shelf comes loose within a week.
• Not checking what sits behind the wall — drilling into wiring or pipes.
• Marking by eye without a level — the shelf ends up visibly crooked.
• Decorative brackets that are too weak for the real load.
• A heavy shelf on one bracket — it drops on one side.
• Covering sockets or switches with the shelf.
• Using standard plugs in hollow brick — they just spin and fail to grip.

What to prepare

• Choose the location — which wall and what height.
• Buy the shelves beforehand.
• Check whether the mounting hardware is included.
• Find out what wall type you have.
• Move furniture away from the wall.
• If there is wallpaper — keep in mind that drilling leaves marks.
• Decide what will be stored on the shelf — this affects the bracket choice.
• Make sure there is a power socket for the drill.
• Provide the intercom code.

A real case from Warsaw

A client in Bemowo wanted three IKEA LACK shelves above a desk. The wall was plasterboard on a metal frame. Standard plugs were not an option — shelves filled with books weigh 10-15 kg each. The technician found the studs with a detector and secured the brackets into the metal profiles. Between the studs he used molly bolts. All three shelves were installed in 40 minutes, dead level. A month later the client confirmed they were holding stacks of books with no problem.
