How much it costs and what affects the price
The cost depends on the base area, mosaic type (glass costs more in labour), element size (smaller means more joints and longer grouting), base shape and the amount of cutting around the drain and edges. Mesh-backed mosaic is faster to install than loose pieces. Epoxy grout — Mapei Kerapoxy or Litokol Starlike — is mandatory for shower bases; standard cement grout will not do. How mosaic base tiling works
- Base inspection. We check slope to drain (1-2%), surface flatness and waterproofing condition. Mosaic is thin — any bump will show.
- Priming. We apply a primer for better adhesion, compatible with the membrane if present.
- Layout planning. We find the base centre and laying direction. Mesh-backed mosaic goes in sheets — joints between sheets must match the internal joint spacing.
- Adhesive application. White flexible adhesive (Mapei Kerabond White or Ceresit CM 17 White) with a 3-4 mm notched trowel. We press the sheet, align it. Cuts around the drain — scissors on the mesh and a tile cutter for individual pieces.
- Epoxy grouting. Mapei Kerapoxy or Litokol Starlike — we fill every joint. Epoxy grout does not absorb water and will not darken. It sets in 30-40 minutes so speed matters.
- Cleaning. We remove grout residue with a dedicated cleaner (Mapei Kerapoxy Cleaner). Every mosaic piece must be spotless.
- Sealing. Base-to-wall junction — sanitary silicone matching the grout colour.
Common mistakes with mosaic base tiling
- Cement grout on a base — turns black and leaks within 3-6 months. Epoxy only.
- Grey adhesive under glass mosaic — it shows through and changes the colour. Glass and light mosaics need white adhesive only.
- Uneven substrate — mosaic is 4-6 mm thin; every bump is visible. The surface must be perfectly flat.
- Misaligned joints between sheets — the gap at sheet edges must equal the internal joint width, or stitch lines become visible.
- Too much adhesive — mosaic sinks in, adhesive squeezes into joints, grout cannot fill them. 3-4 mm trowel maximum.
- Late epoxy grouting — it sets fast and becomes nearly impossible to clean. Work in sections.
- Skipping waterproofing — mosaic has more joints than large tiles, meaning more water paths. Membrane is mandatory.
- Glossy glass mosaic without anti-slip properties — attractive but dangerous. Shower bases need matte or textured surfaces.

- Base ready: screed with slope, waterproofing applied and dry.
- Mosaic purchased with 10-15% spare — mesh-backed (30×30 cm sheets).
- White flexible adhesive (Mapei Kerabond White, Ceresit CM 17 White).
