Shower Base Mosaic Tiling in Warsaw

Mosaic on a shower base is a time-tested choice used by designers and tilers all over the world. Small pieces (2×2, 2.5×2.5, 5×5 cm) on mesh adapt to any slope, fit neatly around the drain, and give a naturally slip-resistant finish thanks to the tight network of grout lines. Bisazza, Dunin, mosaics from Paradyż and Tubądzin — there is plenty to choose from: glass, ceramic, stone. We work all over Warsaw — from Żoliborz to Praga-Południe. Want a shower base that looks good and works properly? Call us — we’ll help pick the mosaic and lay it for you.

How much it costs and what affects the price

The price is shaped by the base size, the kind of mosaic (glass takes more labour), piece size (smaller pieces mean more joints and more time spent grouting), the shape of the base, and how much cutting is needed around the drain and edges. Mesh-mounted mosaic installs faster than separate loose pieces. Epoxy grout — Mapei Kerapoxy or Litokol Starlike — is required for shower bases; ordinary cement grout is not suitable here. Consumables are covered in the labour price. Mosaic, adhesive and grout are bought by the client. Current rates are in the table below.

How mosaic base tiling works

  1. Base inspection. We check the fall to the drain (1-2%), the flatness of the surface, and the condition of the waterproofing. Mosaic is thin — every raised spot will show.
  2. Priming. We apply primer to improve adhesion, matched to the membrane if one is already there.
  3. Layout planning. We mark the centre of the base and the laying direction. Mesh-backed mosaic is laid in sheets — joints between sheets have to match the spacing inside the sheet.
  4. Adhesive application. White flexible adhesive (Mapei Kerabond White or Ceresit CM 17 White) with a 3-4 mm notched trowel. We press the sheet in and line it up. Cuts around the drain — scissors for the mesh and a tile cutter for single pieces.
  5. Epoxy grouting. Mapei Kerapoxy or Litokol Starlike — we fill all joints fully. Epoxy grout does not take in water and does not go dark. It starts setting in 30-40 minutes, so you need to move fast.
  6. Cleaning. We wipe off grout residue with a dedicated cleaner (Mapei Kerapoxy Cleaner). Every mosaic piece needs to be clean.
  7. Sealing. Base-to-wall joint — sanitary silicone matched to the grout colour.

Common mistakes with mosaic base tiling

  • Cement grout on a base — it goes black and starts leaking within 3-6 months. Epoxy only.
  • Grey adhesive under glass mosaic — it shows through and alters the colour. Glass and light mosaics need white adhesive only.
  • Uneven substrate — mosaic is only 4-6 mm thick; every bump shows up. The surface has to be perfectly flat.
  • Misaligned joints between sheets — the gap on sheet edges must match the inner joint width, otherwise stitch lines show.
  • Too much adhesive — the mosaic drops in, adhesive gets pushed into the joints, and grout cannot fill them. 3-4 mm trowel maximum.
  • Late epoxy grouting — it sets quickly and then is very hard to clean. Work section by section.
  • Skipping waterproofing — mosaic has more joints than large tiles, so there are more routes for water. A membrane is mandatory.
  • Glossy glass mosaic without anti-slip properties — looks nice but is risky. Shower bases need matte or textured surfaces.

What to prepare before the technician arrives

  • Base ready: screed with slope, waterproofing done and fully dry.
  • Mosaic bought with 10-15% extra — mesh-backed (30×30 cm sheets).
  • White flexible adhesive (Mapei Kerabond White, Ceresit CM 17 White).
  • Epoxy grout — Mapei Kerapoxy or Litokol Starlike, colour matched to the mosaic.
  • Epoxy grout cleaner (Mapei Kerapoxy Cleaner).
  • Sanitary silicone matched to the grout colour.
  • Make sure there is power and water nearby.
  • Empty the bathroom completely — we need full access during grouting.
  • Confirm the drain position — the mosaic is cut around it.
  • Send access details: intercom, parking, floor number.

A real case from Warsaw

A bathroom in Żoliborz after a full renovation. The client picked Dunin Stone Mix 2.5×2.5 cm — natural stone on mesh in grey-beige shades. Walk-in base, 140×80 cm, with a Viega linear drain. The substrate was even, with Mapei Mapegum waterproofing already in place. We installed the mosaic on Mapei Kerabond white adhesive, cutting around the drain one piece at a time with a diamond disc. Grout — Litokol Starlike Evo, Grigio Seta colour. We handled the epoxy in 0.3 m² sections so cleaning could be done on time. Cleaning agent — Litokol Litonet. Wall joint — colour-matched sanitary silicone. The whole job took two days. The client said the mosaic on the base looks much more interesting than standard tiles and is fully non-slip — the dense grout grid gives it natural texture.

Frequently asked questions

Why is mosaic good for a shower base?

Small pieces follow the slope very well, go neatly around the drain, and the dense grout grid gives natural grip. It also has a stylish, more premium look.

Is epoxy grout mandatory?

On a shower base — yes, without question. Cement grout goes dark and starts leaking within 3-6 months. Epoxy (Mapei Kerapoxy, Litokol Starlike) holds up for years.

What mosaic size is best?

2.5×2.5 cm is the standard choice for bases. 5×5 cm goes in faster. 2×2 cm gives the most flexibility for tricky shapes.

Glass or ceramic?

Ceramic is simpler to work with and costs less. Glass stands out more but needs white adhesive and careful grouting. For bases, pick matte — glossy glass is slippery.

How long does it take?

A standard base — 1.5-2 days. Most of the work time is spent on epoxy grouting and cleaning.

Is waterproofing needed under mosaic?

Yes, absolutely. Mosaic has more joints than large tiles — that means more ways for water to get through. A membrane underneath is essential.

What is included in the price?

Labour, consumables and travel within Warsaw. Mosaic, adhesive, grout and silicone are bought by the client.

Is mosaic slippery?

Matte and textured — no. The dense grout grid adds grip. We do not fit glossy glass mosaic on shower bases.

Which brands do you recommend?

Bisazza (Italy) — premium. Dunin — very good value. Paradyż, Tubądzin — more budget-friendly options with decent quality.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes, on workmanship. If the mosaic comes loose because of an installation mistake, we will repair it.
