How the removal works

1. We check how the skirting is fixed: plugs, adhesive, nails, or clips.
2. PVC on clips — taken off by hand starting from one end.
3. MDF/wood on plugs — gently eased off with a putty knife, then the plugs are removed.
4. Glued — separated with a thin blade, then the adhesive residue is cleaned away.
5. The wall is checked: any chipped areas are filled.
6. The old skirting is gathered up and removed from site.

Common mistakes

• Pulling the skirting off by force — it takes plaster or plasterboard with it.
• Prying with a crowbar and no pad — leaves dents in the wall.
• Skipping removal before painting — a bare strip shows afterwards.
• Discarding skirting that could still be reused.

Can the old skirting go back on?

MDF and timber usually can, provided it comes off carefully and gets numbered as it goes. PVC clip-on skirting tends to snap at the clips — then new boards cost less than repairing the old ones.
