Parquet varnishing: what the job involves
Varnish protects parquet from water, dirt and wear, and also decides whether the floor ends up matt, satin or gloss. Varnishing means a primer and several coats of varnish on a clean, freshly sanded floor, with a light sand between coats.
The price is per square metre and depends on the number of coats and the type of varnish.
How varnishing works
- vacuuming the floor after sanding;
- a primer suited to the wood species;
- the first coat and drying;
- a light sand with fine paper to knock back raised grain;
- further coats, usually two or three in total.
Varnish or oil
Varnish forms a hard film on top, stands up to water and is easy to clean. Scratches in varnish, though, are usually fixed by doing the whole room. Oil soaks into the wood, looks more natural and can be patched locally, but needs regular care. Kitchens and hallways more often get varnish.
What to prepare
An empty, sanded room and an idea of the look you want: matt, satin, gloss, natural tone or whitened. After varnishing you can walk on the floor carefully after half a day or so, and furniture goes back after a few days, per the varnish data sheet.
Common questions
Does water-based varnish smell?
Far less than solvent-based. You still need ventilation while it dries.
When can furniture go back?
Usually after a few days, and rugs after a week or two, depending on the varnish.
Can it be varnished without sanding?
A sound old finish can sometimes take a refresher coat after a light key. The state of the finish decides.
