Skirting board removal: what the job involves
Skirting boards come off before a floor is replaced, walls are painted or new, nicer skirting goes on. Removing skirting looks quick, but boards stuck on with grab adhesive or nailed in can pull lumps of plaster and paint off the wall, which then needs repairing.
How the handyman removes skirting
- cutting through the silicone or caulk between board and wall;
- easing the board off with a flat bar and a packer so the wall is not dented;
- unscrewing clips and screws on mechanically fixed skirting;
- scraping adhesive residue off the wall and floor.
Boards that are going back up are removed more carefully and labelled with the section they came from. Boards for the skip come off faster.
What can turn up behind the skirting
Behind the skirting you often find that the wall was never painted down to the floor, and the plaster stops a few centimetres above the screed. If the new skirting is lower, those spots need making good. Sometimes there are cables hidden in the skirting channel, for the TV or router, for example. The handyman keeps them safe for re-laying.

Common questions
Can skirting come off without damaging the wall?
Usually yes, with careful work. Strong adhesive on weak plaster can cause small chips, and the handyman will warn you beforehand.
How long does removing skirting from a flat take?
A few rooms usually take an hour or two. Getting the adhesive off takes the most time.
Can the old skirting be refitted?
Timber and MDF often can, if it came off in one piece. Clip-on PVC skirting can almost always be refitted.
