Parquet sanding: what the job involves
After years the parquet has gone grey, is scratched by the door and paler where the bed stood. Sanding takes off the top layer of old varnish and wood until a clean, even surface appears, ready for new varnish or oil.
The price is per square metre. Varnishing or oiling afterwards are separate items.
How sanding works
- checking for loose blocks and punching down nails;
- sanding with a drum or belt sander through several grits;
- edging along the walls and into corners with a smaller machine;
- filling gaps with filler mixed with wood dust;
- a final sand and vacuuming the floor.
How many times it can be sanded
Solid parquet and solid boards survive several sandings because the wood above the tongue is thick. Engineered boards with a thin wear layer take one light sand or none. Laminate is never sanded. The tradesperson checks the thickness at a threshold or skirting before quoting.
What to prepare
An empty room and the skirting off, if it is being replaced. The machines are loud and dusty even with extraction, so warn the neighbours and close doors to other rooms. Give the floor area and photos in the request.
Common questions
Is sanding very dusty?
The machines extract dust, but fine dust still settles. Close off the other rooms and tape the doors.
How long does a room take?
The sanding itself is usually one day, then varnish or oil and drying time.
Will deep scratches and stains come out?
Most will. Very deep marks, for example from a flood, may still show.
