Glued flooring laying: what the job involves
Carpet, roll cork, PVC tiles or contract flooring in an office lie best when bonded to the base across the whole area. They do not shift, ripple or suffer from chairs on castors. Glue-down flooring covers preparing the base, spreading adhesive with a notched trowel and pressing the flooring down.
The price is per square metre. Adhesive and levelling compound are materials.
How laying works
- cleaning, vacuuming and priming the base;
- cutting the flooring with an allowance;
- spreading adhesive with a trowel suited to the material;
- laying and rolling it down;
- trimming at the walls and finishing the seams.
The right adhesive
Carpet, PVC and cork each need their own adhesive. The wrong one can stain the flooring, fail to grab it or let go after a few months. The flooring maker usually names the adhesive and its open time, meaning how many minutes after spreading the material can still go down.
What to prepare
An empty room, the flooring unrolled in it before fitting, dimensions and photos of the base. Give the material in the request and whether the adhesive is bought. For offices, say if the work must be out of hours.
Common questions
How is gluing different from tape?
Tape holds the edges; adhesive holds the whole area. Under heavy use adhesive performs much better.
Does the adhesive smell?
Water-based adhesives smell little. Ventilating while it dries is still a good idea.
When can furniture go back?
Usually after a day, depending on the adhesive and the maker.
