Floor threshold installation in Warsaw — clean transitions between flooring types
A threshold strip is one of those details nobody pays attention to until it is gone. Without it, the join between laminate and tiles looks untidy, edges start to rise, and dust gathers in the gap. In new builds around Bialoleka and refurbished flats in Bemowo it looks the same: two different floor finishes meet in a doorway and nothing ties them together. That is exactly what we sort out.
How much does it cost
The cost comes down to the profile type, the width of the doorway and the difference in height between the surfaces. A flat aluminium strip is cheaper than a multi-level compensating profile. How the installation works
- Checking the joint: measuring the opening width and the height difference between the two floor surfaces.
- Selecting the proper profile: flat, T-shaped, multi-level or flexible — depending on the setup.
- Cutting the strip to size — hacksaw or angle grinder for aluminium, utility knife for PVC.
- Marking drilling points and drilling into the subfloor (for screw-down thresholds). If underfloor heating is present — adhesive or self-stick profiles only.
- Fitting wall plugs and screwing the strip in place. For concealed fixings — the mounting rail goes in first, then the decorative cover clicks on top.
- Final check: the strip must sit solid, and its edges must not catch the door when it swings.
Common mistakes
- Using a flat profile where the height difference is 5 mm or more — it cannot hold the material down, so the edges stay raised.
- Drilling into a floor with underfloor heating — this damages the heating cable, and the repair costs far more than the threshold.
- Choosing the wrong colour — ‘oak-effect’ aluminium next to grey laminate looks off.
- Cutting the strip too short — gaps show on each side, and they collect dirt and debris.
- Not leaving an expansion gap — the laminate presses against the strip and buckles.
- Sticking a self-adhesive strip onto a dusty floor — it comes loose within a week.
What to prepare before the visit
- Buy threshold strips in the right type and colour — measure the width of every doorway beforehand.
- Both floor surfaces must be fully installed before threshold fitting.
- Check whether there is underfloor heating in the joint area — this decides how the strip can be fixed.
- Clear the doorways of furniture and personal items.
- If a door already rubs on the floor — tell us; the door leaf may need trimming after the threshold is installed.
A real case from Warsaw
We were called to a two-bedroom flat in Bialoleka. The owners had installed laminate in the bedrooms and living room, and tiles in the hallway and kitchen. Four doorways had no thresholds, with height differences from 3 to 7 mm. We chose multi-level aluminium profiles matched to the laminate colour. The kitchen had underfloor heating, so we used adhesive fixing there — no drilling. The other three were installed with concealed screw fixings. The whole job took about ninety minutes. Doors shut freely, the joints look clean, and nothing catches (compatible with Quick-Step, Egger, Kronopol and similar).
Frequently asked questions
Which threshold works between laminate and tiles?
If both surfaces are level — a flat or T-shaped profile. If there is a height difference — a multi-level strip. Material: aluminium lasts the longest; PVC costs less but wears out faster.
Can I skip the threshold altogether?
You can, if both materials are the same thickness and the joint line is straight. In that case a cork expansion strip or silicone sealant will do the job. But a threshold is more dependable — it covers the gap and protects the edges from chipping.
What about underfloor heating?
No drilling. We use a self-adhesive profile or mounting adhesive. Before installation we always check where the heating elements run.
The threshold makes the door stick — what now?
We trim the bottom of the door leaf. It is a separate service, but we can handle it during the same visit.
