How the replacement works — step by step
- We switch off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit — safety comes first.
- Set up the ladder and make sure access to the fitting is stable.
- Take out the old bulb: unscrew it, release it from spring clips or remove the shade.
- Check the lamp holder for melting or oxidised contacts.
- Install the new bulb and make sure it sits securely.
- Turn the breaker back on and test — the bulb should shine steadily without flickering.
- If several bulbs need replacing, we go through each point one by one.
Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)
- Changing a bulb without turning off the breaker — with halogens this is risky; they heat up a lot and there is a danger of electric shock.
- Touching the bulb glass with bare fingers — especially important with halogens: grease marks can sharply reduce lifespan.
- Buying the wrong base — GU10 and GU5.3 look alike but do not fit each other.
- Installing a bulb with higher wattage than the fixture allows — this can overheat the shade and stain the ceiling.
- Trying to reach the ceiling from a stool or chair — even falls from 1.5 metres lead to injuries.
- Skipping the transformer check when changing from halogen to LED — the old transformer may not suit the LEDs, which then start flickering.
Warning: electrical work, even something as basic as changing a bulb, means dealing with live fittings and working at height. Halogens reach 250 °C. Don’t take chances — call a professional, especially when there are many fittings or the ceilings are high.

- If you know the base type (GU10, E27, etc.) — tell us beforehand.
- If you are not sure — take a photo of the fitting and send it over.

A real case from Warsaw
A client in Srodmiescie asked us to change 12 halogen GU10 bulbs in recessed spotlights in the kitchen and hallway. The ceilings were stretch, 2.7 m high. Why does a bulb burn out too quickly?
