Light switch installation

A new switch goes in when a flat is new, when a light is added, or when you want to control a light from somewhere else. If the back box and wires are already in the wall, it is a short job. If a box needs adding or a cable running, wall chasing comes into it.

The price is per switch. Two-way and intermediate switches take more work than single ones.

What the installation covers

• switching off the circuit and testing it is dead;
• checking the back box and wires;
• connecting the switch mechanism;
• levelling and fixing the plate;
• testing every circuit it controls.

Single, double, two-way

A single switch controls one light, a double switch two groups of lights. A two-way switch lets you turn a light on from two places, such as both ends of a hall, but needs the right cable between them. A dimmer is chosen to suit the bulbs.

What to prepare

The switch and plate from your chosen range. Give the number and type of switches in the request and add a photo of the location. If there is no back box in the wall, mention it, as one will need fitting.
