Running electrical cables

A new socket by the desk, a light over the table, power for a dishwasher or a moved switch all need a cable running. It can go in a chase under the plaster, in conduit, in surface trunking or above a suspended ceiling. The choice depends on whether the room is being renovated or already finished.

The price is per running metre of cable. Chasing, back boxes and connection in the consumer unit are charged separately.

What cable running covers

• planning the route from the power source to the point;
• choosing the cable size for the load;
• laying the cable in a chase, conduit or trunking;
• fitting back boxes and preparing the cable ends;
• testing the cable for continuity and insulation.

Under the plaster or in trunking

Cable under the plaster is invisible but means chasing and then plastering the wall. Surface trunking makes no dust and suits a finished flat, though it is visible. With a suspended ceiling, the cable runs above the boards in conduit.

What to prepare

Describe where the cable should run from and to, and what it is for. Add photos of the wall and the consumer unit. Say whether chasing is acceptable or you prefer trunking.
