Junction box wiring

A junction box is where the wires from several sockets, lights and switches meet. Old twisted joints wrapped in tape heat up and work loose over time, and alterations to the wiring mean new cables have to be added. Junction box wiring tidies the joints onto proper connectors and restores a solid contact.

The price is per box. Boxes with many wires and old aluminium wiring take more work.

What the work covers

• switching off the circuits and testing they are dead;

• closing the box and testing everything it feeds.

Aluminium and copper

Older blocks sometimes have aluminium wiring. Joining it straight to copper causes corrosion and a hot joint, so connectors made for that purpose are used. The tradesperson will say whether part of the wiring is worth replacing.

What to prepare

Say in the request where the box is and what has stopped working or needs adding. Add a photo of the box. If it has been plastered over and its exact position is unknown, mention that.
