Bulb and halogen replacement: what the job involves
Changing a bulb sounds trivial until it is a light three metres up, halogen downlights with seized rings or a chandelier with a dozen shades. Then you need a ladder, the right tool for the fitting and sometimes a new lampholder.
The price is per bulb or downlight. The bulbs are supplied by the client.
What the replacement covers
- switching off and letting halogens cool down;
- removing the shade or downlight ring;
- taking out the old bulb, even a seized one;
- fitting the new bulb and checking it lights;
- putting the shade back.
Halogen to LED
When swapping halogens for LEDs, check whether the downlights run from a 12 V transformer. Some LED bulbs do not work with old transformers and flicker. In that case replace the transformer or choose 230 V GU10 bulbs.
What to prepare
New bulbs with the same cap as the old ones. Give their number and the ceiling height in the request and add a photo of the fitting. If you are not sure which bulb to buy, photograph the old one.
Common questions
Is it worth calling someone just for bulbs?
With high ceilings, downlights and many bulbs at once, yes: without a ladder and practice it is easy to break something.
What if a downlight stays dark after the swap?
The transformer or lampholder may be at fault. Replacing them is a separate item.
Will the old bulbs be taken away?
Energy-saving and LED bulbs go to an e-waste collection point. This can be agreed in the request.
