The old chandelier is tired, the shade has cracked, or the fitting no longer suits the decor — time for a change. Replacement covers removing the old fitting, checking the wiring and fixings, installing the new one and testing. In Wilanow and Srodmiescie we often swap lights when flats are being refreshed — clients buy new fittings and we take down the old and hang the new in a single visit.

How the replacement works

  1. We isolate the lighting circuit.
  2. Remove the old fitting: disconnect cables, unscrew from the mounting.
  3. Inspect cables and fixings: if everything is sound and compatible we move to installation.
  4. Change fixings if needed — for example, hook to bracket.
  5. Connect the new fitting and secure it.
  6. Switch on and test.

Things to watch out for

  • The new fitting may be heavier — check that the fixings can take the weight.
  • If the old one hung from a hook and the new one uses a bracket, the mounting needs changing.
  • Ceiling cables may be short if they were trimmed during a previous installation.
  • Swapping a two-group chandelier for a single-group one leaves a spare cable that must be safely terminated.
  • Replacing a chandelier with a flat LED panel may leave a visible hook hole.

Warning: even replacing a light is electrical work at height. Incorrect wiring or weak fixings are dangerous. Call a professional.

What to prepare

  • Buy the new fitting complete with mounting hardware.
  • Clear the area beneath the ceiling.
  • Show us where the consumer unit is.
  • If the new fitting is a different type (e.g. spots instead of a chandelier), say so in advance — modifications may be needed.

A real case from Warsaw

In Wilanow a client refreshed his living room and bought a modern LED panel to replace an old crystal chandelier. The chandelier weighed 5 kg and hung from a hook. The panel is light but mounts on a bracket. We took down the chandelier, removed the hook and fitted a bracket on two fixings. We connected the panel — two wires, no earth (there was none in the ceiling). Tested — it works, even light output. We also terminated the third wire that had fed the second group of the old chandelier. The whole job took 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chandelier be replaced with spotlights?
Yes, but preparation is needed: a cable run to each spot and ceiling cut-outs. That is not a simple swap but a new-point installation.

Will the technician take away the old fitting?
Usually not — the old fitting stays with the client. If disposal is needed, discuss it in advance.

How long does replacement take?
If fixings are compatible — 15–25 minutes. If fixings need changing — up to 40 minutes.

Can I do it myself?
If you have electrical experience and a ladder — yes, after switching off the breaker. But heavy chandeliers are awkward and unsafe to hang alone.
