Oven cleaning: grease, burnt-on residue and door glass

After a Christmas duck and a few pizzas, the inside of the oven door turns brown and the kitchen fills with smoke every time you switch it on. Burnt-on grease builds up in layers. A fresh splash wipes off with a cloth, but grease that has been baking on for months needs an alkaline cleaner and some time. Renting is its own story: when you move out of a rented flat, the oven is the first thing the landlord opens.

What the price depends on

The price is per oven and depends on how bad it has got. Fresh splashes come off in one go. A year of build-up has to be softened, left to work and gone over several times. The design matters too: removable side runners, door glass that comes apart, a convection fan on the back wall. Labour rates are in the table.

Oven cleaning80–200 zł/szt

Indicative prices. Ranges for a typical scope. Fixings included, materials separate. Minimum order 300 zł.

Handymen usually bring their own products, and the offer says how they are charged. The hob, the cooker hood and the microwave are not part of this job and are agreed separately.

How it’s done: by hand, steam or pyrolysis

An ordinary enamel oven is cleaned by hand. Alkaline gel goes on the walls and is left to work, then the softened residue comes off with a plastic scraper and a sponge, and the walls are rinsed with clean water several times. Trays and racks soak separately.

In a pyrolytic oven the residue burns to ash at a very high temperature and just needs sweeping out. Oven cleaner stays out of these, as it can mark the enamel. The handyman deals with what pyrolysis can’t reach: the door seal, the glass outside and between the panes, the runners.

Catalytic liners have a rough, matt surface. Abrasives and strong chemicals ruin them, because the porous coating clogs and stops absorbing grease. They are taken out and cleaned gently, and worn ones are easier to replace.

Steam and hydrolysis programmes cope with light dirt. Old carbon won’t shift with steam and still has to be finished by hand. The door is a separate question: on many models the inner glass comes out, and the grime between the panes only shows once it’s apart.

Safety first

Oven cleaning gels are caustic. Wear gloves, keep a window open, never mix different products, and keep the gel off the heating element, the fan, the temperature sensor and the door seal. The oven is disconnected from the mains before work starts. On a gas oven, the burner and igniter must not get soaked. Children and pets are better off in another room for the duration, and afterwards the empty oven is heated once to burn off any smell.

How the cleaning goes

  1. The handyman checks what kind of oven it is: enamel, catalytic liners or pyrolysis, gas or electric.
  2. Trays, racks and runners come out, and the door glass too if it can be removed.
  3. Cleaner goes on the walls, the roof of the oven and the door, then it’s left until the residue softens.
  4. The residue is scraped and sponged off, with stubborn patches done twice.
  5. Leftover cleaner is rinsed off in several passes, otherwise the oven will smell of chemicals when heated.
  6. The runners and glass go back in, and finally the door is checked to make sure it closes tightly.

Common mistakes

  • Wire wool on the enamel and glass. It leaves scratches that grease clings to even faster.
  • Gel got onto the catalytic liners and they stopped cleaning themselves.
  • Cleaner wasn’t fully rinsed off, so the first bake makes the whole kitchen smell of it.
  • Someone scrubbed the door seal with the rough side of a sponge and tore it.
  • Pyrolysis was run with the trays and racks still inside, though the manual usually says to take them out.
  • The door glass was taken apart by guesswork, without the manual, and wouldn’t go back together.

What to prepare

  • A photo of the inside with the door open, plus the rating plate, which is usually on the frame by the door.
  • If you know, mention whether the oven has pyrolysis or catalytic liners.
  • An empty oven and space in front of it. Clearing dishes off the worktop helps.
  • Don’t use the oven for a few hours before the handyman arrives, as a hot oven can’t be cleaned.

People often add the hob and the cooker hood filter to the same visit. Put that in the job description straight away so the handyman brings the right products.

Frequently asked questions

How often should an oven be cleaned?

It depends how much you cook. Fresh splashes are easier to wipe off once the oven has cooled than to scrape off later as a layer of carbon.

Can the dirt between the door panes be cleaned?

If the glass comes out, yes. Some doors can’t be taken apart without tools, and the handyman can tell from a photo of the rating plate.

Is oven cleaner safe where food is cooked?

Yes, as long as it’s rinsed off completely. That’s why the final rinse is done in several passes and the empty oven is heated afterwards.

Will cleaning help if the oven doesn’t bake well?

Cleaning removes dirt but doesn’t repair anything. If the element doesn’t heat, the fan has stopped or the thermostat is playing up, you need an appliance repair, which is a separate service.

How to order

Describe your oven in the app and how dirty it is, and add photos. Tradespeople near you will send offers with their own price and timing. Compare them by reviews and pick one; only that person sees your address.

You pay the handyman directly and they issue the invoice. They stand behind their own work and will come back if patches were missed or cleaner was left behind. Old chips in the enamel, worn surfaces and faults in the oven itself are not on them.
