Rodent control: getting rid of mice and rats

Something scratches behind the kitchen wall at night, droppings turn up in the cupboard with the rice and pasta, and a bag of dog food in the garage has been chewed open. Mice head into houses in autumn as it gets cold outside, and a single trap rarely solves it. Below: how rodent control works, who is allowed to carry it out and what to prepare before the first visit.

What the price depends on

The price depends on the property, whether a flat, a house with a cellar, a garage or a warehouse, and on its size. It also matters whether you’re dealing with mice or rats, how many bait stations are needed and how many follow-up visits it will take. Rates are in the table.

Who carries out rodent control

Professional rodent baits are biocides, and in Poland some of them may only be used by trained professional users. That’s why rodent control is done by DDD firms (disinfection, disinsection, deratisation) with the right permits and trained staff. A general handyman can seal gaps and fit mesh, but leave the professional baits to a specialist. Ask for the offer to name the firm and state its permits.

In a block of flats, the cellars, bin stores and common areas are the job of the building administration or housing cooperative. If the rodents come from there, report it: one treated flat in an untreated building won’t achieve much.

Mice or rats

A mouse can get through a gap the width of a pencil, lives close to food and leaves small droppings that look like grains of rice. Rats are bigger and warier. They use the same runs along the walls and more often come in from the sewers, cellars and bin areas. A rat may avoid new bait for a long time, so dealing with them usually takes longer.

The species decides the choice of stations, bait and where it goes. Take photos of the droppings and gnaw marks, and the specialist will know what they’re up against.

Safety

Baits usually contain anticoagulants and are dangerous to children, cats and dogs. They only go into locked bait stations that can’t be opened without a key, and in places pets can’t reach. Dead rodents and droppings are never handled with bare hands. Don’t sweep droppings dry, as that raises dust: dampen them with disinfectant first, then clear them up wearing gloves. If a pet has eaten bait, take it to a vet straight away along with the name of the product.

How rodent control works

  1. Inspection: where the signs are, how the rodents get in, what gaps and routes there are.
  2. Locked stations go along the walls on the rodents’ runs and are marked on a plan.
  3. The specialist tells you what to seal and what to put away so food is out of reach.
  4. Follow-up visits: checking where bait was taken, topping up, moving stations.
  5. Once activity stops, the stations and any leftover bait are collected.
  6. Entry holes are sealed with metal mesh or mortar.

Common mistakes

  • Loose bait scattered in the open, and the cat got to it.
  • Gaps filled with expanding foam, which rats chew through easily.
  • One mouse caught in a trap and the problem declared solved.
  • Open bags of food and pet food, so the bait holds no interest.
  • The flat treated while the building’s cellar and bin store stay as they were.
  • Giving up after the first visit without waiting for the follow-up.

What to prepare

  • Photos of droppings, chewed packaging, holes and runs.
  • Where and at what time you’ve seen or heard the rodents.
  • Dry food, flour and pet food in sealed containers.
  • If there are children or pets at home, say so in the job description.
  • Access to the cellar, garage, loft and vent grilles.

Frequently asked questions

When will the mice be gone?

It depends how many there are and which species. The specialist gives the timing and number of visits after the inspection, in their offer.

Do ultrasonic repellers work?

There is no solid evidence that they get rid of rodents. If mice have already moved in, don’t count on a repeller.

Will dead rodents smell?

They may, if one dies inside a floor void or behind panelling. Stations are placed so most can be collected, but it can’t be ruled out entirely.

Who pays for rodent control in a block of flats?

Common areas are covered by the administration or cooperative. Treatment inside a flat is usually paid for by the tenant or owner.

How to order

Describe in the app what you’ve seen and where, and add photos of the signs. Specialists and firms near you will send offers with their own price, timing and visit schedule. Compare them by reviews and permits and pick one; only that contractor sees your address.

You pay the contractor directly and they issue the invoice. They stand behind their own work: they’ll move stations that are in the wrong place and top up bait within the agreed visits. Rodents coming from a neighbour’s untreated cellar, holes in the foundations and food left out are not on them.

Do pest control and hold the right permits? Create a tradesperson profile and take on rodent jobs near you. You work for yourself and decide your own business set-up.
