What the price depends on
The price comes down to the area, the base and the number of coats. Brick and clay block take clay with hardly any preparation. Smooth concrete, plasterboard or old paint need a sanded primer and mesh. Then there’s the finish: simply floated, or smooth and compacted with a trowel. Ceilings, window reveals and corners go slower than a flat wall. Rates per square metre are in the table.

Where clay plaster makes sense
It works best in living spaces: bedrooms, living rooms, children’s rooms, hallways. In a kitchen it goes on away from the hob and sink. In a shower area, wherever water runs down the wall, clay has no place, because it softens.
The base matters more than people expect. Brick, ceramic block and old lime plaster suit it well. Concrete and plasterboard first get a bonding primer with quartz sand, and plasterboard joints are reinforced with mesh. Timber-based boards are covered with reed matting or another carrier for the clay.
You don’t have to paint it; clay has its own colour. If you want a different shade, use clay, lime or silicate paints, which let vapour through. Acrylic or latex paint will seal the pores, and the wall stops handling moisture. Small chips and scratches in clay are easy to fix: dampen them and float them over again.
How the work goes
- Checking the walls: what they’re made of, whether there’s old paint, loose patches or damp.
- Cleaning and priming, with a sanded bonding coat on smooth surfaces.
- Mesh over plasterboard joints, in corners and around openings.
- The base coat. If thickness is needed, it goes on in several passes rather than one heavy layer.
- Drying. The room is aired, but without draughts, space heaters or a radiator blasting at the wall.
- The finish coat, floated to the texture you’ve chosen.
- Optionally, a coat of vapour-open paint.
The dry mix is stirred up wearing a mask: dust from clay and sand is best not breathed in. Furniture and floors are covered with sheeting while the work goes on.
Common mistakes
- Drying sped up with a heater, leaving the plaster covered in a web of cracks.
- One thick coat instead of several thin ones.
- Plaster applied over glossy oil paint with no bonding primer, and a month later a sheet of it fell off.
- Cement or gypsum added to the mix for strength, which ruins both its properties and its grip.
- The wall painted with acrylic, so the clay can no longer breathe.
- Plasterboard joints left without mesh, so the cracks followed the board lines.
What to prepare
- Photos of the walls in full plus close-ups of problem spots.
- The area, and what the walls are made of: brick, concrete, plasterboard, old plaster.
- A test patch or colour sample if you have a particular shade in mind.
- An empty room; furniture is best taken out or pushed to the middle.
- Being ready to do without the room for a few days while the coats dry.
Frequently asked questions
Can clay plaster go on plasterboard?
Yes, after a sanded bonding primer and with the joints meshed. Without that the clay doesn’t hold well and cracks along the seams.
Is it suitable for a bathroom?
Outside the splash zone and with decent ventilation, yes. Inside a shower or above the bath, no.
Can you wash it?
Not the way you’d wash latex paint. Dust comes off with a dry cloth or a vacuum, and a small mark can be gently rubbed out with a damp sponge.
How long does each coat take to dry?
It depends on the thickness, the temperature and the humidity in the room. The handyman gives the timing in their offer.
How to order
Describe the room, its area and the type of wall in the app, and add photos. Tradespeople near you will send offers with their own price and timing. Compare them by reviews, look at photos of their earlier clay work and pick one; only that person sees your address.
You pay the handyman directly and they issue the invoice. They stand behind their own work and will put it right if the plaster comes away or cracks because of how they applied it. Damp in the walls, a weak old base and hidden defects are not on them.
