Isotra: Czech blinds for inside and out
Isotra, a Czech sun-protection manufacturer, makes both interior horizontal venetians and exterior ones for the façade. Interior blinds come with slats of different widths and are fixed to the sash, inside the reveal, or on the wall above the window. Exterior venetians go outside, on the façade or in a recess above the window. They stop the sun before it reaches the glass, and in a heatwave they do far more than anything indoors.
Fitting the two is a very different job. Any careful handyman can hang interior blinds in one visit. Exterior ones mean work on the façade, sometimes at height, fixing into an insulated wall, and usually a motor. They’re normally planned when windows are replaced or a flat is renovated.
Interior slats hang on ladder strings and are raised by a cord. When a ladder snaps, the slats hang at an angle. When the cord wears, the blind won’t go up evenly. Both are usually fixed without replacing the whole blind.

What people get wrong
- Yanking a crooked blind until the second ladder string snaps too.
- Hanging interior blinds in the reveal with no clearance, so the slats catch on the window handle.
- Fixing exterior blinds into insulation with ordinary plugs. After a season the rails wobble.
- Leaving the motor on exterior blinds unset, so the slats keep working in strong wind.
- Cleaning slats with harsh chemicals until the coating starts to flake.
Before the visit
- Film the blind going up and down.
- Photograph the head rail and the fixing points.
- For exterior blinds, photograph the window from outside and note the floor.
- Clear the windowsill.
Connecting exterior blind motors to the mains is for someone qualified in electrical work, with the circuit switched off.

You pay the fitter directly and the invoice comes from him. He answers for his own repair or fitting and redoes it if something is off. Wear on parts he didn’t replace, or the state of the façade, is not on him. Spare parts, new blinds and taking the old ones away are paid separately.
