Screen fly screens come in several types. A frame screen sits in the window for the whole season and is the simplest, most common option. A roller screen rolls up into a cassette above the window and comes down when you need it. For a balcony door you want a sliding or hinged screen, or walking through it becomes a nuisance.

The mesh varies too. Besides the standard mesh there’s a reinforced one that survives a cat’s claws, and a fine mesh against pollen. Finer mesh stops more, but it also lets less air through, which matters in a heatwave.

Frame screens are made to fit a particular window. You measure the sash opening including the seal, not the glass, or the screen either won’t go in or leaves a gap. Fixings can be hooks, spring clips or hinges. If you’d rather not drill into the frame, there are no-drill fixings.

• Photograph every window and door, with close-ups of the handle and the seal.
• Decide which type goes where: frame, roller, door screen.
• If you have pets, say so: you’ll need reinforced mesh.
• Clear the sills and the way to the balcony door.
