Which skirting, and how to fix it
Arbiton is a Polish company that makes floor finishing products: skirting boards, underlays and profiles. The skirting comes in different heights and materials, and some has a channel for cables. The type decides how it is fixed, so read the label first.
There are three main methods: construction adhesive, clips screwed to the wall, or plugs straight through the board. Adhesive is quick, but the skirting will not come off later without damage. Clips let you remove it when a new cable needs running or a floorboard needs replacing. On a crooked wall the fixings go closer together, or the board gapes between them.
Corners are mitred or covered with ready-made corner pieces from the same range. A mitre looks cleaner but needs a mitre saw and patience, because corners in older blocks are rarely a true ninety degrees.
At door frames the skirting ends with a cap or is cut flush to the architrave. If old skirting is coming off, the fitter removes it and scrapes the adhesive off the wall first, since new boards will not sit on lumps. Paintable MDF skirting is usually painted after fitting, with the gap at the wall sealed with acrylic caulk, so agree who does that.

Where it goes wrong
- Skirting glued or nailed to the laminate instead of the wall. The floor loses its gap and splits open.
- Adhesive on a dusty wall. A month later a whole length comes away.
- Too few fixings on a crooked wall. A gap stays between the clips and collects dirt.
- A joint between two lengths in the middle of a visible wall. Plan it behind furniture or at a corner.
Before the tradesperson arrives
- Measure the room’s perimeter and buy skirting with spare for cuts.
- Get matching corners, connectors and end caps if you use them.
- Move furniture away from the walls.
- Decide whether cables go in the channel and have them ready.
