What to know about Remmers window coatings
Remmers sells water-based window systems: primers, impregnants, opaque paints and translucent stains. Opaque paint hides the grain and gives an even colour. A stain keeps the wood visible and suits frames that were varnished or tinted to begin with. Don’t mix the two on one frame, because a stain over old opaque paint goes on patchy.
The product is maybe half the result. The rest is preparation. Flaking paint comes off down to a sound layer, grey patches get sanded back to pale wood, and cracks and chips are filled before any paint goes on. If the bottom rail is soft enough to dent with a fingernail, that’s rot. It gets cut out or the piece replaced, because no coating will save it.
Timing matters as well. Frames are painted in dry weather above freezing. Water-based coatings don’t like cold and damp, so the outside of the frames usually waits for the warm season.

Where it goes wrong
- Painting over flaking paint. The new coat lasts exactly as long as the old one underneath.
- Skipping the primer. Bare wood soaks paint up unevenly and blotches show through within a season.
- Painting over seals and hardware. The sash then closes stiffly and the rubber cracks.
- One thick coat instead of two thin ones. It dries slowly, catches dust and cracks sooner.
- Shutting the window while the paint is wet. The sash sticks to the frame and the coat tears the first time you open it.
Before the painter comes
- Clear the window sills and take down curtains, blinds and insect screens.
- Decide whether it’s inside only or both sides. Outside is a different job and depends on the floor you’re on.
- Photograph each window in full, plus close-ups of cracks, grey patches and sash corners.
- If you’ve already bought paint, put the product name and colour in the order.
Booking it
Describe the job in the app: how many windows, what shape, and add the photos. From those a painter can judge the state of the wood before coming out, and puts a price and a date in the bid. Several painters send bids, you compare price, rating and reviews, and pick one.
The phone number and address are shared once you choose; until then you talk in the chat. You pay the painter directly and he issues the invoice. Paint, primer and sanding supplies are usually paid separately from the labour, and so is taking away the rubbish. Whoever did the painting answers for it and fixes his own mistakes. Rot hidden inside the rail is not on him.
