How PAX works and what matters
PAX is a set of separate frames that stand next to each other and are screwed together. Doors, hinges and interior fittings are sold separately, so the same frame can end up as very different wardrobes. The interior parts belong to the KOMPLEMENT range: shelves, drawers, baskets, rails. They’re easiest to fit once the frames are up and fixed.
When a tall frame is raised, its corner swings through an arc that reaches higher than the top of the finished wardrobe. IKEA mentions this in the instructions and advises leaving clearance above. Without that clearance, the fitter has to work around it, building the frame upright in place or changing the order of assembly. Better to sort this out before the boxes are opened.
Every frame is fixed to the wall. Brackets are in the box; the plugs have to suit the wall, whether that’s concrete, brick or plasterboard.
Doors are a story of their own. Hinged doors hang on hinges that adjust in three directions until all the gaps match. Sliding doors run on tracks, and how level the frames stand decides how well they glide.

Mistakes that mean rebuilding later
- Frames screwed together without being levelled. The top steps up and down and neighbouring doors don’t line up.
- The back panel slotted in off-square. The frame racks and one door rubs against the next.
- The wrong soft-close hinges, or hinges in the wrong holes.
- KOMPLEMENT drawers fitted before the doors are hung, and then a drawer catches on a hinge.
- A wardrobe left unanchored because “it fits snugly”.
IKEA PAX wardrobe assembly: getting ready
- Measure the ceiling height and compare it with the frame height on your order.
- Check the skirting board: a thick one stops the wardrobe sitting flush to the wall.
- Clear anything that stops a frame being laid on the floor.
- Photograph your IKEA Planner layout or the shopping list, so the fitter can see which doors and fittings go where.
Choosing a PAX fitter
Describe the wardrobe in the order: how many frames, what doors, whether there are interior fittings, plus the plan or photos of the boxes. Assemblers see the scope and send their own prices. Don’t pick on price alone. Reviews often show who has already built a PAX with sliding doors.
Contact details open up after you choose, you pay the fitter directly and he issues the invoice. Fixings for the assembly are normally included; carrying boxes up and taking cardboard away are paid separately. The fitter answers for his assembly and will readjust doors that drift because of his work. A crooked wall or hollow spots in it are not on him.
