What to know about BRW shelves
The brand has shelves in many of its collections, often designed to hang alongside units from the same range. So the height comes from the furniture, not from guesswork: how far above the unit, centred or aligned to one edge, a single shelf or a staggered pair.
The usual material is laminated chipboard. Light and easy to wipe, with two weak spots. The edge chips if it’s drilled carelessly. And the threads in chipboard don’t like being reused: after a move, a screw that has been taken out and driven back in holds noticeably worse.
On the wall, these shelves hang on brackets or a concealed fixing. Either way it comes down to the plug, and the plug is chosen for the wall, not for the shelf.

Mistakes that show later
- The shelf is level, but the unit below isn’t. If the floor slopes, the cabinet leans a bit and now the shelf looks crooked. That gets sorted on site, before drilling.
- Old shelves go back up after a move on the same screws in chewed-out holes.
- Standard plugs in plasterboard, and a shelf of books slowly pulls away.
- Overloading. A laminated shelf under heavy books sags in the middle over time.
- Drilling straight above a socket without checking the wall.
Safety note: above sockets and switches, run a cable detector over the wall before the drill comes out.

- Decide what the shelf goes above and at what height, and mark it in pencil.
- If the shelves aren’t new, check that all the parts are there.
- Clear the unit or desk under the spot.
- Take a photo of the wall and the furniture next to it for the job post.

The handyman gets your contact details and address once you’ve chosen. You pay them directly and they issue the invoice. Plugs and screws are usually part of the job. New brackets, if the old ones went missing, are bought separately.
