Assembly is half the job
Like most flat-pack brands, Forte uses laminated chipboard with pre-drilled holes. Build the carcass slightly out of square and the bracket holes on the back no longer line up with the marks on the wall. So the shelf gets checked across the diagonals first, and only then does the drill come out.
Before assembly, lay the parts out and tick them off against the list in the instructions. Better to find a missing screw or hinge on the floor than halfway through, with half the shelf already up.
If the pack includes wall fixings, look at them closely. The generic plug in the little bag is meant for a solid wall. For plasterboard or hollow brick, the handyman will use something else.
A shelf with doors weighs more than an open one, and every time a door swings open it pulls a little on the top fixings. Flats in Mokotów can have a concrete wall in one room and a plasterboard partition in the next, so fixings are chosen for the exact spot, not for the whole flat.
What it costs and how to book: furniture assembly in Warsaw.
What usually goes wrong
- The shelf was assembled on the floor without checking the diagonals, and on the wall it hangs as a slight rhombus.
- Screws driven in at full speed. The chipboard strips and the joint barely holds.
- A bracket lands on a joint between slabs or on a void. The plug spins.
- Scratches on the laminate from tools laid straight on the panel. A sheet of cardboard underneath prevents that.
- A shelf with doors hung too low, so the door catches on whatever stands beneath it.
Safety note: the wall gets checked for cables before drilling, especially above sockets.
Forte shelf installation: getting ready
- Mark the spot and height, and check that switches and sockets aren’t in the way.
- Keep the box and instructions until the job is done.
- Clear some floor near the wall for assembly.
- Put what the wall is made of in the job post, if you know.

Open the appThe handyman answers for their own assembly and hanging and puts it right if the error was theirs. Factory defects in the parts and a weak wall aren’t on them, though they’ll tell you what can be done.
