Resin-bound stone carpet: balconies, terraces, steps

The balcony tiles are lifting at the edges, and the terrace of a detached house shows new cracks after every winter. That is exactly where people choose a stone carpet: dry fine aggregate is mixed with resin and spread as one continuous layer with no grout lines. It looks tidy and grips better underfoot than glazed tiles when wet. But it only lasts as long as the base underneath, so think about that before you pick the stone colour.

What the price depends on

Labour is priced per square metre. The rate depends on the area, the state of the base and the shape: a rectangular balcony is quicker than steps with risers or a terrace full of corners, posts and thresholds. It also matters whether the old surface has to come off and cracks need repairing. Current labour rates are in the table.

Resin-bound stone carpet250–380 zł/m²

Indicative prices. Ranges for a typical scope. Fixings included, materials separate. Minimum order 300 zł.

Resin, aggregate, primer and edge trims are paid for separately, and with this finish the materials are a big part of the budget. Removing old tiles, taking away the rubble and carrying bags upstairs are separate items too, listed in the handyman’s offer.

Where it goes and which resin to use

Most often balconies, terraces, front steps, paths and driveways. Indoors you see it in hallways, garages and on stairs. Outdoor stone carpet is permeable and water drains straight through it, so the base needs a fall. Without one, water sits inside the layer and freezes there in winter.

The resin depends on the location. Epoxy is hard-wearing but yellows in sunlight over time, so it is used indoors. Balconies and terraces get a UV-stable polyurethane resin. If an offer for an open terrace says epoxy, ask the handyman why.

The stone can be marble or quartz, in different grain sizes and colours. A finer grain gives a smoother surface, a coarser one more texture. Ask for a photo of a finished job in the same stone, because the colour in the bag and on the floor often differs.

Safety first

Resin and hardener irritate skin and eyes, and some have a strong smell. For indoor work you need fresh air coming in, and children and pets are better kept out. Don’t walk on the new surface or put furniture back until the time given by the resin manufacturer has passed. It depends on temperature and humidity, and rushing it only costs you later.

How laying works

  1. The base is checked for cracks, loose areas, damp and a fall for drainage.
  2. If needed, the old surface comes off, cracks are filled, and the base is ground and vacuumed.
  3. The base is primed and edge trims are fixed so the layer keeps its shape.
  4. Dry aggregate is mixed with resin in the manufacturer’s ratio, in small batches.
  5. The mix is spread and compacted with a trowel to an even thickness. Steps and wall edges are done separately.
  6. The surface is left to cure before anyone walks on it.

Common mistakes

  • Laying on damp concrete: moisture from below breaks the bond and the carpet starts to peel.
  • Cracks in the base were left, and a season later they show through the surface.
  • Epoxy on a sunny terrace, and the stone turned yellow.
  • Wet or dusty aggregate, so the resin didn’t bond properly and stones work loose.
  • Work started in rain or cold, even though resin has a minimum application temperature.
  • No fall under a permeable surface, so water stays in the layer.

What to prepare

  • Photos of the whole surface plus close-ups of cracks, edges, the threshold and where water runs off.
  • Rough area and shape: balcony, steps or terrace, how many corners and posts.
  • What is there now: concrete, screed or tiles, and how old it is.
  • Your preferred stone colour and grain size, if you already know.
  • In a block of flats, ask the building administration or the wspólnota first whether you can change the balcony surface.
  • An empty balcony or terrace, with furniture, pots and the drying rack moved out.

Frequently asked questions

Can stone carpet go over old tiles?

Sometimes, if the tiles are firmly bonded, don’t sound hollow when tapped and are properly prepared. Loose tiles come off. This is decided on site or from detailed photos.

Is stone carpet slippery?

The surface is rough, so it is usually less slippery than smooth tiles, especially on steps. Ice is slippery on any surface, and this one is no exception.

How do I clean it?

Sweep it and wash it with water now and then; a pressure washer on a low setting is fine. Greasy stains are best removed straight away. Test any new cleaning product on a hidden spot first.

How long does laying take?

It depends on the area, the state of the base and the weather, plus curing time for the resin. The handyman gives the timing in their offer.

How to order

Describe in the app what you want covered and add photos and a rough area. Tradespeople near you will send offers with their own price, timing and list of materials. Compare them by reviews and pick one; only that person sees your address.

You pay the handyman directly and they issue the invoice. They answer for their own work and will put it right if stones come loose because of how it was laid. A damp base, cracks in an old slab and hidden defects underneath are not on them, which is why the base gets checked first.
