Wall-hung toilet installation (frame)

A wall-hung toilet looks light and makes cleaning easier, because there is nothing under the pan but floor. All the weight, though, is carried by a frame hidden in the wall, and water and waste are connected to it before any boxing goes up. So wall-hung toilet installation happens in two stages: the frame before tiling, the pan after.

Stages of installation

• setting the frame plumb and at the right height, fixed to the wall and floor;
• connecting the water to the cistern and the waste bend to the drain;
• a pressure test before the wall is closed;
• boarding the frame, then tiling;
• after tiling: cutting pipes and bolts to length, fitting the pan, flush plate and seat.

Height and access

The pan rim usually ends up about 40 cm above the floor, but the frame lets you set it higher or lower, which helps for tall people or children. Decide before the wall is closed. The flush plate doubles as the access hatch to the cistern valves, so it should never be permanently blocked by a shelf or mirror.

Wall and load

The frame must be fixed to both wall and floor as the manufacturer specifies. In a plasterboard partition a freestanding frame is used, which carries the load down to the floor. With a weak fixing the pan starts to move within months and the grout around it cracks.
