Silicone removal: what the job involves
Old silicone around a bath, shower tray, washbasin or worktop yellows over time, grows mould and peels away from the tiles. Before new sealant goes on, the old one has to come off completely, including the thin film left on the tiles. New silicone over old residue does not bond well and soon turns black again.
Silicone removal is priced per running metre of joint. It is usually booked together with applying new silicone in the same request.
What removal covers
- cutting out the old silicone without scratching the tiles or bath;
- removing residue with a silicone remover;
- cleaning and degreasing the joint;
- treating mould in the gap under the silicone;
- drying the joint before new silicone is applied.
Why drying matters
Moisture often collects under old silicone. If new sealant is laid on a wet joint, mould comes back within weeks. So the joint needs to dry between removal and resealing, and the bath or shower is best left unused during that time.
What to prepare
Take photos of the joints and say where the silicone needs removing: bath, shower tray, washbasin or kitchen worktop. Clear toiletries off the bath edge and shelves. If you want a particular colour of new silicone, buy it beforehand or mention it in the request.

Can removal scratch the bath?
Not with the right tools. Acrylic baths and glass enclosures need extra care, so mention which type you have.
When can I use the bathroom again?
Once the joint is clean and dry, and after new silicone usually after a day. The exact time is set by the manufacturer.
