McAlpine in a Polish bathroom
McAlpine is a British maker of traps and waste fittings: bottle traps for basins, tubular traps for sinks, traps for baths and shower trays. In Poland you see them less often than local brands, usually in flats where the fittings came over from the UK or arrived with the bathroom furniture.
In practice that means a replacement sometimes has to be ordered, or a trap from another brand fitted instead. That’s fine as long as the basin outlet diameter, the waste pipe diameter and the height where they meet all match. So before you buy anything, the plumber should see a photo of the old trap and its connections.
A leak doesn’t always mean a whole new trap. These traps have cone and flat washers that harden over time. If the body is intact, a new washer and a good clean are sometimes enough. Cracked plastic, a stripped thread, or a trap that leaks again after every clean, and it’s time to change it.
A smell from the drain is a separate issue. A trap always needs some water standing in it, because that water blocks the sewer gas. If the smell appears after a long trip, running the tap fixes it. If it comes back every day, the trap may be set up wrong or not sealing.

Common slip-ups
- Grabbing the first trap on the shelf without checking the diameters. Then the adapter shopping begins.
- Tape or silicone on the nuts instead of a washer. It holds for a few days.
- Overtightened plastic. The crack often shows only at the next leak.
- Using drain chemicals on a trap that’s already leaking.
- A waste pipe that runs uphill from the trap. Water sits, gunk builds up faster and the smell comes back.
- No way to reach the nuts because the vanity unit was built in too tight. Every clean turns into taking furniture apart.
Get ready like this
- Take a close-up photo of the trap so the markings on the body are readable.
- Clear the cabinet and lay a towel down.
- Don’t throw the old trap away before the visit: it’s easier to compare it with the new one.
So how do you book it?
Two moves. You describe the problem in the app and add photos, and plumbers who do this kind of repair in Warsaw send bids at their own price. From the photos they can tell straight away whether it’s a washer or the whole trap.
Then you pick one by price, rating and reviews. The phone number and address are visible only after you choose. You pay the plumber directly and he issues the invoice. The trap and any parts are paid for separately from the labour.
Order in the app
Describe the job, add photos and the address. Tradespeople send their own prices and dates, and you pick one of the offers.
Open the appWhoever fitted it answers for his own work and will redo it if it starts leaking. An old pipe in the wall and hidden damage in the plumbing are not on him.
