Ferro Washer Replacement in Warsaw: Where Is the Tap Dripping?

Where it drips and what that means

Ferro taps are common Polish fittings, so spare parts are usually easy to find. First, though, you need to work out exactly where the water is getting out. Each spot means a different seal.

Dripping from the spout with the tap closed. On single-lever taps it’s most often the ceramic cartridge or its seals. On older two-handle taps it’s the classic rubber washer in the valve head, a few minutes’ work to change.

Leaking from under the handle. Usually that’s the O-ring on the cartridge. It can be changed without taking the tap off: shut off the water and take the handle apart.

Water pooling under a swivel spout in the kitchen. The spout has its own O-rings, and constant swinging wears them down. A new set and a dab of tap grease usually sort it.

Damp in the cabinet under the sink. Often it’s the washer in the flexible hose nut, or the hose itself. The seals in the tap have nothing to do with it.

A bath mixer has two more spots. The diverter between spout and shower head starts letting water through both ways over time, and the shower hose has washers at each end. If water comes out of the spout and the shower head at once, the diverter is usually to blame.

When is a seal no longer enough? When the body is cracked, the thread is stripped, or water still gets out in the same place after the swap. Then it makes more sense to think about a new cartridge or a new tap.

Ferro washer replacement: common mistakes

• Turning the handle harder and harder to stop the drip. The washer gets crushed and the thread wears.
• A washer from the odds-and-ends box without checking the size.
• Taking the tap apart without closing the valves under the sink.
• PTFE tape on a thread where a flat washer is what actually seals.
• Not cleaning off limescale during the swap. A new seal on old scale won’t last long.

• Check that the valves under the basin or sink close.
• Take a short video or a photo of where it drips.
• Clear the cabinet under the sink.

Before taking the tap apart, shut off the water and open the tap to release the pressure.
