What to check when fitting Caleffi
Caleffi is an Italian company best known for heating and plumbing valves and components. The brand on the box does not replace the usual checks: length, the thread at each end (nut or male fitting), and whether the hose is rated for hot water. A hose for a water heater and one for a tap can look alike and be built for different jobs.
Look at the seal. Some ends use a flat washer, others a cone. A flat washer gets no sealant and no hemp, and a cone is never cranked until it creaks. The nut goes on by hand, then just a little more with a spanner.
If the hose feeds a gas hob or boiler, that is a separate matter. Gas is connected only by someone qualified for it, and it is worth saying so in the order.
The angle valve is often replaced along with the hose. A seized valve can strip the thread in the wall on the first turn of a wrench, so it is better to plan for it from the start.

How people make it worse
- Putting a new washer on top of the old one “to be safe”. Two washers do not seal.
- Bending the hose sharply at the nut to squeeze it into a tight cabinet.
- Buying a hose by eye and finding out on the day that the thread is wrong.
- Opening the water in one go. Turn it on slowly and watch each joint.
Preparation
- Empty the sink cabinet or clear access to the water heater.
- Check that the angle valves shut off.
- Take close-up photos of the old hoses at both ends.
- If you already bought hoses, keep them nearby, still packed.
